A strong start
harry-345188 June 2022
From the get go Iman owns this character with a phenomenal performance in a fun and epic opening scene, the editing, acting and cinematography from this episode is great. There are some issues with it however I personally didn't enjoy the avengers con sequence but beside that this was a great start. I hope if people can move past the power changes they will see this is a great start to the show.

Among the strongest beginnings of a Disney+ Marvel series. Warning: Spoilers
The episode (and the series) works as a introduction to Kamala's character, how she feels about her future being uncertain with the pressure of what she must do againts what she wants. Finding that balance, i think, will be key for her character, also mending her relationship with her parents (specifically her mother), it's left to see if during the series, her idealize vision of a superhero life is challenge and she learns that being a hero is much more than just having powers and be accepted.

Now, on the technical aspect, cinematography, editing and visuals are amazing! The one shots and the creative use of the visuals, i had to stop the episode every few minutes to take a look and the visuals are so cool, like when Kamala and Bruno are riding bikes while talking about different versions of Captain Marvel or texting and the signs show their replies, those were of my favorite scenes.

Both combine to tell a wholesome story about a girl that tries to find where she fits in the world, although a bit too fast pace and the humor won't be for everyone, also you must be up to endgame to enjoy all the references, it's a solid piece of media.

Just one word of advice, manage your expectations and know what to expect from this series, this isn't Moon Knight or Falcon and The Winter Soldier or Hawkeye, where those are also action series. This is more of a family drama and coming of age story, action isn't the priority of the series.

Ms Marvel is really enjoyable
synysteraryan8 June 2022
What do you didn't thought i would enjoy this show but surprisingly i actually did. Didn't never watch the trailer when it was released but decided to watch the first episode cause i had nothing else to watch. And to my surprise the episode was really good. The lead actress is really great. Her acting skills really kept my focus on the show. The plot and story is kinda tedious and same to most of the superhero origin so that was the only part i was "meh" about. Other than that there's not much to criticize about. Let's see how the rest of the episodes gonna be.

Generation Why
lassegalsgaard8 June 2022
I remember when they said that Marvel Studios' new Spider-Man films were going to feel like a John Hughes coming-of-age film. While they certainly tried, they never overcame the fact that it lacked a lot of personality. The first trailer for "Ms. Marvel," however, looked like something that would be that, but with some personality. The first episode already presents the unique approach that they're taking with this show, making it feel like those teen films we're used to, but with some superhero powers too. I was so surprised by this premiere, which gave me all the vibes that I needed it to and more.

What is it that makes this show something new for Marvel? It's the fact that they take a step back and focus squarely on the classic "want" and "need" of Kamala Khan. She "wants" to go to this fan event dressed up as her favorite Avenger. She "needs" to understand the value of family. That's the basic setup of this episode and it works as well as anything could have. It's a memorable introduction to a superhero that not a lot of people know about, but surely will now. It displays a complete sense of fun and wonder in the little time it has to set everything up, and it doesn't apply a lot of action to it but focuses squarely on the development through the story. I like that, and it's a change of pace from "Moon Knight," which immediately threw you into the action. There's a real artistry on display in the form that it's shown, and I found myself enjoying every little effect they used to fully convey to the audience that this is a teen show. I might not always find those enjoyable, but this seems like it could be up my alley. There's not a lot of powers in this episode, but the way they change up her backstory makes it feel more personal to the culture of Kamala Khan, which seems fitting in a show about the value of family. Also, Iman Vellani is just an absolute blast. She has so much fun here and is just infectiously joyous.

With "Generation Why," Marvel has introduced their newest superhero, and she is someone that I'm interested to see the development of because her story is intriguing. Vellani disappears into the role and sells the joy of discovering her superpowers, as well as the frustration it can be being a teenager and being annoyed with everything.

Bland plot with some dazzling editing.
iqbalqasim-232828 June 2022
I've seen this story so many times. Young female who wants to find out who she really is and let's go of cultural traditions to become that. I guess it's new with it being in marvel, but it's not really that interesting so far. The characters aren't unlikeable but Kamala is always kinda bored and lazy. The editing however was really fun and creative. There was clearly a lot of passion put into the visuals of this show and I do appreciate that. Although I don't think I'm really that interested to see a second episode. Eh. It's not bad... But not great.

A fresh perspective
I am a big marvel fan and have felt overwhelmed at times at how much content we get and staying up to date. Watching this however feels so new and great obviously meant for young teens but it is such a feel good so far definitely will be watching all the episodes. It just feels very fresh and new for marvel which I am v happy about!

Only MCU show that doesn't feel like a gimmick.
rangojalex9 June 2022
This is what I wanted from MCU shows in the first place. This feels authentic and like it's just going to be a realistic, believable, and grounded story with low stakes. As someone who really disliked how Moon Knight progressed, and has been disappointed with every MCU Disney+ show to date, this one seems to realize what the previous ones lacked: character development, focus on interactions over CGI, and building tension between characters. Iman Vellani was great it in this first episode and is very likeable, as opposed to her character's idol Captain Marvel. The editing is so awesome and unique, it's probably the strongest aspect of the show rivaled by the great cast of course. I also loved the world building of the overall MCU here with AvengersCon. It's not a 10/10 because it's still pretty basic and generic and doesn't have much rewatch value, but overall it's a great starting episode.

Not sure why a show with this little CGI couldn't have more episodes though.

Whatever happened to cause and effect?
SureCommaNot8 June 2022
I'll say right away that the lead actress does a superb job in the role (for her first time acting, at least) and some of the animations are particularly creative.

But I am not one to fall for style-over-substance, and the first episode just had so many problems with the story. With the exception of the regrettably-cliche-but-well-acted depiction of the mother, I just didn't believe any of the other characters' actions. They didn't react to things the way that actual human beings react, but instead behaved more like comic-book caricatures than anyone else in the MCU.

The physics, also, often didn't make sense, especially in the climactic scene.

And we knew, going into this, that budgetary restraints necessitated a change to Khan's powers... but I had no idea the visuals would still look so cheap, even with the change to the character. I'm baffled. Honest question: Are the scriptwriters and special-effects team all teens? That's the only explanation I can think of.

Surprisingly good
mild-247438 June 2022
Being a massive fan of the Ms Marvel comics since their inception, I was skeptical as to how her portrayal on screen would be, especially due to the announced changing of her powers.

I am happy to say that for me, this is the best pilot episode so far in any of the new Disney Plus shows, giving a great character that is faithful to the comics, whilst also taking some decent creative liberties to modernize the story even more and make it fit into the MCU. Loved the artistic elements of the episode as well. Really hope they don't mess up on this one!

Edit: I don't think it was a 10, just rated it that to counterbalance from all the 1 star review bombing.

Eh
MamadNobari978 June 2022
I mean, I enjoyed the episode and it's not like the episode is boring or anything.

It's just that it's mediocre and the story isn't that good.

After Moon Knight's finale, I realized I've been way too generous with these MCU D+ shows and I shouldn't give them that high of a rating when they're decent at best and they all fail to wrap up the story in a natural way in the finale because they have to be only 6 episodes.

So I'm not excited about anything from Disney Plus anymore.

But I'd say this once was decent and the main actress did a good job and the creators also did a good job of introducing us to her family and making her character likable and not cringey. And thank God they didn't make one of her school friends into a horrible school bully cliché (yet), because I'm tired of it and they did that recently in Stranger Things season 4.

The main problem is with the story and the dialogue, because the dialogue, especially between Kamala and her parents, doesn't feel natural and is there only to further the plot and feels artificial. And not to mention that there seems to be something mission between these dialogues because they just jump from every conversation to her mother telling her how disappointed she is in her and stuff. There's just something missing between these that makes it less natural.

And those scenes with her parents are so overdramatized that it's kinda goofy at times. But I kinda get it, I'm from a country where most parents are like that too, so it's not that weird or exaggerated to me.

Another problem with Kamala's character is that her whole motivation and origin story is "I love Captain Marvel because she looks cool, and now I randomly get superpowers because...?" But that's on par with The Marvels! Captain Marvel was also someone who randomly got powers with the worst origin story in MCU, or Monica even.

But at least Kamala has more personality in this 45 minutes and shows more emotion than Carol Danvers did in the entire 2 hours of Captain Marvel.

I'm not saying don't make a Kamala Khan tv show or movie, but at least give her a better origin story or tangible struggles like Peter Parker. Because it makes us question why some more beloved and well-known characters with far better origin stories haven't made even a cameo in the MCU, but she gets to have a show before them.

Also, how do people know what Drax actually looks like or even know who he is? Did Scott Lang describe him that good on the podcast that he has fans now and they know what he looks like?

Already Surpassing Expectations
SHU_Movies8 June 2022
The trailers honestly didn't look that great to me, and I was pretty much convinced that this would be one of the worst things to come out of the MCU. I was wrong. This was pretty damn good and was a solid start to a series that has so much potential! Iman was great and I can't wait for next week!

Solid opening
jumperdawg8 June 2022
I don't understand these negative reviews already. For not being the biggest Ms Marvel fan, I'm digging the style and tone of this show. Tells a solid story of a kid trying to be just that, a kid.

Fan girl superhero

It a bit slow at the beginning. For episode 1, I'm still can't attach to any character on this series. The visual quite different than most of MCU series or film. The doodles look good.

Not that good
sailor_julia8 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So here we have an annoying girl who is a fan of the avengers specially captain marvel.

Of course since she is Muslim with a family from Pakistan, her family do not understand her. (Clichés much) Like I said she is annoying and can't do anything without trip, fall but she has a geeky friend who invent stuff.

Now she get superpowers and will save the world.... No thank you.

This show is clearly a Disney show for kids.

Decent start, with strong finish to the episode.
labamboos8 June 2022
Must admit I was not eagerly awaiting this series, had Hawkeye vibes (not my favourite). Early in the episode was a bit slow, but Kamala's quippiness kept me engaged. The real heart of the story for me was her relationship with her family (mom especially). That final scene is great television, particularly for some of us that had similar conversations growing up between two cultures. Hope it stays central, and will be looking forward to the next episode now.

A Good Start
luis8620128 June 2022
I am not expecting anything from this show since most MCU series are kinda disappointing. But this first episode is decent. It sets up the theme of the show. The story is straightforward and the pacing is good. Also, it doesn't have that weird MCU humor in it. All the jokes and humor fit into the story well. Looking forward to the next episode.

A little predictable but very fun
seankimaug8 June 2022
The story itself was a little bit predictable but that's to be expected for the pilot episode. Super visually creative (I loved all the drawings and the bright colors all throughout), the acting is good, and all the characters have great chemistry. It reminded me of Into the Spider-Verse in a weird way, and that's definitely a positive thing. Overall made me excited for what comes next.

Good but not up to the mark.
tejassawant139 June 2022
Kamala, A coming of age teenager who lives in a typical conservative family and a fan of Captain marvel struggling to explore herself.

The whole episode is fun to watch. Especially the way it is designed by Art department.

But, The premise storyline is definitely not promising. We really can't really engage to the characters that much.

The Last 10 minute sequence doesn't feel like 'something we haven't seen before.' Performances are good by every actor.

Hoping for some good and meaningful storyline from coming episodes.

"She's trouble, this one"
daisukereds9 June 2022
So! Musically overcharged (and maybe a little much), stylistically VERY interesting and creative with some great ideas, plus a few neat camera movements.. Sadly, the children don't feel like real children, and with a forced friendship/context and dramatic woes.. the show failed to get me behind. It's too much, even for 40 minutes. Maybe pacing issues, and content being too tropey? I might continue watching solely because the production is off the roof, but this has got to be one of the most disappointing superhero origins of the MCU so far. Not only it feels rushed, but no amount of flourish can get me over how bland, easy and uninspired it's start is.. a "let's get it out of the way in any shape or form we can, while distracting the viewer with LOTS of other less important stuff".

SO MUCH FUN!!!
sneakyunderbelly10 June 2022
Promising start to this character!!! Great acting from the parents and Ms Marvel herself. Clearly aimed at a younger demographic, but still a lot of fun for the older MCU fans too. Not an action-packed episode, more character-building, which is great, and gives a little taste of things to come. Not all superheroes need to be so serious, and I'm here for Ms Marvel.

Episode 1
Prismark109 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ms Marvel arrives as Marvel's first Muslim origin superhero. The success of Black Panther meant that Disney had confidence that this concept would work.

The first episode had to establish the origin story. It combined it with Scott Pilgrim type zippiness.

Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a 16 year old High School student in New Jersey going through a turbulent period in her life.

She wants to go to AvengerCon with her best friend Bruno dressed as Captain Marvel.

Her mother would only allow her to go with her father, with both dressed as the Hulk.

Directed by Adil and Bilal who directed Bad Boys for Life. It aims for a more authentic take on Pakistani/Muslim family life in America.

As a Marvel television show, it has a more irreverent and colourful tone. It is aimed squarely at a younger and family demographics.

It is certainly elevated by the natural performance of Iman Vellani. It is hard to believe that this is her acting debut.

By the end Kamala has powers courtesy of her grandmother. Her mother might also know more, she did manage to rustle up that food for Bruno in no time.

Heartfelt but ultimately lacking
Nagitokomeda8 June 2022
Ms Marvel is finally here. This episode is carried by plenty of heart and humour, but it has some weaknesses that hold it back from greatness.

Firstly, Ms Marvel herself is carrying this show. Iman Vellani is so confident and loveable in the role of Kamala and radiates joy whenever she's in a scene, she definetly is passionate about Kamala and it shows. I also liked the nice representstion in the show and how natural it was.

The weaknesses? The dialogue and script are mostly lacking. This is only the first episode, but right now its a clunky time. Also the school drama stuff is really uninteresting to me, it feels so dull and low stakes. The family drama is much more interesting in comparison, and that still isn't that good.

Ms Marvel has a lot of potential. Hopefully now that the first episode is done, the other episodes can tighten up the focus and give us more great Kamala scenes.

Honestly surprising!
harry-327488 June 2022
This show has demonstrated in just this first episode alone that the people and Marvel Studios are making an effort to try new things and expand outwards in their filmmakeing and style, and I'm all for it! This first episode rocks and completely took me by surprise. Iman Vellani does an outstanding job of playing Kamala Khan and clearly has such a deep connection to both the character and the world the character resides in. Very much looking forward to what comes next!
