As fall turns to winter, the Schroeders provide care for ailing dogs, a horse who's losing weight, a stray cat in need of fostering, and check on a new baby llama. In between their usual workload, they squeeze in a two-day trip to the western edge of Nebraska, where the cattle roam free on over 10,000 acres of unspoiled land. There, they take to horseback and round up 650 cows for their annual pregnancy check.

When a young collie is hit by a car, the Schroeders race to diagnose and treat the little dog in critical condition. That's not the only unexpected problem at the clinic though. The docs treat a horse with a serious slash, a guinea pig with a peculiar eating problem, and a pair of unexpected newborn goats. Not to be outdone, Dr. Ben gets Dr. Erin a surprise of her own.

After an aging mare gives birth, the Schroeders hustle to examine her new foal. Since this momma lost her last two babies, the docs administer a plasma transfusion to increase the foal's odds of surviving and continuing this lineage for a new generation. Back at the clinic, Drs. Ben and Erin tend to a flock of pet chickens with a mysterious illness, perform eye surgery on a little girl's cat, and find a new home for three adorable guinea pigs.

Drs. Ben and Erin Schroeder tag-team a range of cases: a goat in extended labor, a hypothermic horse, and a cow struggling after giving birth. Other patients include an anxious canine who can't calm down, a dog requiring surgery for "cherry eye," and a bunny who can't walk. When not tending to animals in need, Dr. Ben enlists sons Charlie and Chase to come up with a plan to celebrate Dr. Erin's birthday.

It's a race against the clock for Dr. Erin as she treats a golden retriever with a mysterious mouth malady and removes a massive tumor from a super senior pug. Meanwhile, Dr. Ben treats a family duck that's been feeling a little flat-footed since he lost his mate. After they change from their scrubs to their Sunday's best, the docs head to a banquet to receive an award for their work in preserving historic downtown Hartington, NE.

Leading up to the big Schroeder family dinner, Drs. Ben and Erin are challenged by some rare animal cases. Dr. Erin performs life-saving surgery on a gigantic dog with a uterus ten-times its normal size, while Dr. Ben tries to get to the bottom of what's ailing an underweight cow. Then, working together, the vets diagnose a trembling pup with a condition they've never seen in real life.
