THE LINEUP – "The Guns and Girls Case"- 1959
During the 1950's there were two Police series that rose to the top. DRAGNET and THE LINE-UP, were both solid Police procedurals that showed how the everyday life of a cop was. The LINEUP ran between 1954 and 1960 with a total of 200 episodes produced. The leads were played by Tom Tully and Warner Anderson as a pair of San Francisco Police Detectives. This particular episode is number 176 of the series.
A sniper dressed in a military uniform uses a rifle with a scope to fire into an office building. Two women in the office are hit, one is killed and the other wounded. Detectives Tom Tully and Warner Anderson are assigned to look into the matter. It turns out the dead woman is a noted psychiatrist while the wounded woman, Nan Leslie, is the assistant.
The Police question Leslie about any possible patients of the doctors who might be guilty of the deed. No joy there so they follow the evidence trail. They find shell casings on a nearby rooftop. From the distance involved, they figure out that the man must have been a crack shot. They quickly hit all the shooting clubs for any possible leads. A look into the wounded woman's past turns up an ex-husband who did time in a mental hospital. He is also a world class rifle shot.
The detectives lean on Leslie and she admits it could be her ex, Robert Symonds. The man does not take rejection all that well. An all points is soon put out on the suspect.
Symonds is soon cornered in a small service station. When he is approached, he fires on the Police. The detectives bring in the ex-wife, Leslie to try and talk the man out. Instead he comes out blazing and is quickly dropped by a return barrage of lead from the Police.
