Well damn.
Save for the 'Hype Man' episode, this was one of the best - and heaviest - of the season. The bookends were completely perfect, with the end leaving some things unclear and questions unanswered that I'm sure will be addressed in the season finale.
The build-up of situations/events that lead to a boiling over of Dave's relationship and the eventual conflict/argument between he & Ally while serious, intense, concluding with Dave looking like the 'bad guy' was something that was a necessary evil of sorts that I feel as - made evident by Dave's realization during Ally's speech and his overall mood, body language, and mindset conveyed as he's driving at the end - no matter the fallout, this more than likely will be the catalyst which leads to an important and positive change in his character's behavior and as a person period.
To that end, I feel the need to air my sense of bafflement with various users critiquing and subsequently rating the show/episodes poorly based on how 'unlikeable' our title character, Dave, is in their opinion. And to that, and especially the few qualms I'm specifically referring to that have been voiced, I simply feel the need to cite the show's description on its main page - it literally spells out who Dave is as his character's portrayed. If you're going to give this particular episode the lowest possible score based on your opinion of this character and who he is as a person, I can't help but ask: what exactly have you been watching this season leading up to this?! Because it surely hasn't been this same show, as any otherwise perceptive viewer would already understand what's at play and why. Curious, if not mildly frustrating.
Another review mentioned and gave the episode a poor review based what seemed like solely on the entire running over the rabbit element while Dave & Ally are driving to the wedding. Which is obviously absurd-buuuut some people fail to see the big picture, as this person clearly did. Naturally I'm against any form of animal abuse depicted for entertainment purposes however context, especially in this case, is everything. First, the entire running it over was an accident. But second, does ANYONE truly believe this was just thrown in there arbitrarily & merely for the hell of it?! No-of course not. Given Ally's speech about the magic trick that she yearned finding out the truth behind when she was younger, this frames and sheds light on the earlier accident in an entirely new way, allowing us to look at it through a whole new lens. I said earlier, that questions went unanswered-like what eventually happened with their relationship?! The thing is, I think we can infer... by both Dave driving solo, AND the rabbit.
In Ally's speech, she creates the analogy of the rabbit from the magic trick and what happened and how that's ultimately representative of that which is special yet unexplainable when it comes to the magic within a relationship... The rabbit represented the magic. And Dave killed the rabbit. As such, Dave 'killed' the magic as in the magic of their relationship. Which is a dark way to look at it all, but I can't really think of any other narrative purpose for the accident than it have - if not this exact one - at least SOME sort of deeper meaning.
I suppose next week we'll see for certain, and I for one can't wait to see how everything is wrapped up and resolved, if at all.
