When you watch this Popeye episode . . .

. . . you'll discover that the actual title on the opening main credits is VALLEY OF THE GOONS, not "The Valley of the Goons." What a difference a redundant "the" makes. It would signify that there is only ONE single solitary Goon Valley, whereas the REAL title leaves open the possibility that their COULD be multiple such dells. In the context of the action presented on screen here, that would make more sense. After all, if Goon-kind were confined to a lone islet, it would be far less likely to have spawned a thriving Goon Skin market. As educated viewers well know, goon pelts make for the most common tympani drum covers, and the wealthier private schools even use goon to cover their bass drums, since inscriptions such as school and\or mascot names are more durable upon it, as goon is generally impervious to continual beating.

This episode is really great, and could be a "Ten" . . .

. . . IF it lived up to its title more. I watched this Popeye cartoon from beginning to end TWICE, and only saw a single firearm. The use of this gat raises some questions about the title valley's population. In every previous stick-up I've seen committed to film, the perpetrator uses his heat to intimidate the robbery victim into surrendering their cash and\or other valuables. Those wayward souls foolhardy enough to have left their home castle sans an equalizer usually comply with the felon's request. If they refuse to cave in, they're often gunned down. Sometimes the bad guy(s) adopt a "leave no witnesses alive" attitude, and off even cooperating prey. However, in this TV show episode, the revolver wielder uses his weapon to force a big wad of bills upon an apparently unarmed fellow citizen! Surely, someone has a screw loose here! Usually I'm not so perplexed by this sort of fare. However, next time I have a chance to see THE VALLEY OF THE GUNS, I'll try to concentrate on the action even harder!
