Brilliant series!
npvarley16 August 2022
This is such a refreshing change from the usual spy stuff, which tends to be US/UK/RUS/CN centric. It's an Israeli production that presents a very even-handed view of the relationship between Israel and Iran.

The plot-lines have been really well worked through Seasons 1 and 2. The pacing is good and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. I binge-watched Season 2 in ONE DAY!

Athens does a good job as a stand-in for Tehran, in terms of the atmosphere and architecture they capture. It's great that the participants all speak their native tongues, too, instead of all English or Israeli.

And while the whole cast does a great job, I give special mention to Shaun Toub (Faraz). He is simply fantastic. Toub gives us such a nuanced portrayal that we feel both repulsion for some of his actions and, yet, by the end, we are rooting for him to survive because we can see that, while he might be misguided at times, he's a man of honour.

Terrific series! Another Apple TV+ cracker!

It is not perfect but very similar to the truth!
footing124 August 2020
I started to watch the series because there was so many reviews in Iran especially in the conservative newspapers. Most of them wrote negative things about the new, as they called, "anti-Iranian" show in Israel.

The first episode wasn't quite accurate to me especially the part where she first came to Iran and saw an execution scene in the middle of the city (I have lived in Iran for 24 years and have never happened to see such a scene in public, maybe I don't go out very often!). But as I continued to watch I get so excited of how accurate the show is. Especially from the cast and crew who don't live in Iran and even can not come to the country to do some research. It is very true. The details and the story. It is not perfect for sure but it's very similar to reality.

I really liked the series so far, it is both smart and entertaining to watch. Politics aside I love the people of Israel and like the multi culture atmosphere in there. As I watch the series I also know more about the country.

I also have to say that I don't like how Israel's secret agency sabotage Iran. Not exactly sure how many of those events, that happen in Iran once in a while, are from Israel but some of those are from them for sure.

Overall, to the makers of the show, thanks for the series that pictures Iranian people (with all of their paradoxes) similar to the truth. Most films that take outside of Iran sadly portrait us too evil.

Not as pro-Israel as I was expecting
dalescotbates26 October 2020
I really was expecting a lot of Anti-Iranian, pro-Israeli propaganda. What I got was one of the best spy thrillers I have seen in a very long while. Also, the characters are extremely well done, given the kind of show this is so, hats of to the writers and the actors for carrying it off so well. The little plot twists, when they happen, are also well done.

Another things is the treatment of the revolutionary guard detective/case officer, whatever his job title is. Just wonderful! At times, I even started routing for him. Basically, this series shows you that the world of espionage is a very dirty world.

The part when the hacker/agent dresses up as a man did seem a little ridiculous although, to be fair I have seen many Middle Eastern youngsters who are fairly androgynous, and the show was so good, that if that was the only slip-up, then it gets a pass from me. I really hope they do a second series, and judging by the ending, that looks set to happen.

I'm speechless

Apart from the accent that some of the actors have, they did an amazing job! They didn't even shoot a scene in iran!!! And wow, everything is just like here in iran!!! The police's behaviour, the secret agents and so many other things.

A great show.
nateso30 November 2022
The first season of Tehran was very very good even if the mossad agent seemed to be incapable of sticking to orders. The second season however is notches above the first. The main reason is the addition of the undercover psychiatrist played by Glen Close. Every episode, every scene actually is full of suspense. The whole second season is edge of your seat great. I am hoping that apple sees fit to do a third season but it may be difficult to live up to the standards of the first two. All of the characters are completely believable and you feel as though you are actually in Iran watching spies compete everywhere.

Excellent series
ruth4421 July 2020
Tehran is a tense and very well made series with excellent performances from mostly Iranian actors now living abroad. The fact that the characters all speak in their native language (Persian or Hebrew) adds authenticity to the atmosphere and they are very convincing performers. Yet another excellent Israeli production which shows a great deal of sympathy to the Iranian characters in the production. Original and intelligent entertainment.

p.s. Watched the final episode in this series - marvellous ending, took me completely by surprise. As for all the posters claiming that this show is 'anti-Iranian' - well it's nothing of the sort. Very sympathetic characterization of the Iranian characters and I'm delighted that there will be a second series.

It has kept me watching
calorne17 June 2022
I am not entirely certain why but I think I prefer this to Homeland.

This isn't as slick or as expensive. But the characters seem more genuine. I caught up with the episodes very quickly and I have to wait a week for each new one and it seems a long wait each week.

Enjoyable Thriller
Pat1005 June 2021
I was going to give a 7 due to some plot weaknesses and the lead's rather angst-ridden performance but then I decided that compared to other current thrillers, it deserved an 8.

To me, knowing nothing of the settings and customs, it looked pretty realistic for a fictional story. Would anyone REALLY expect it to be filmed in Iran?

I was pleased that both the Iranian regime and Mossad/Israeli regime were shown as the bad guys with civilians and lesser ranks caught between them. It seemed like a fair balance.

I liked the plot twists and the standard of production.

I did think towards the middle that it was going to turn into an Iranian soap/travelogue but it pulled itself together and I was glad that I continued watching.

a techno-thriller in the Middle East
dromasca29 July 2020
'Tehran' is one of the most ambitious productions of Israeli television in recent years. Israeli series have not shied away from subjects related to the conflicts in the Middle East, and 'Fauda' is the best (but not the only) example that the 'local' problems of this turbulent area are of interest to the international public and are doing quite well in what concerns the rating when they are well written and done.'Tehran', which is produced by the public television channel, is boldly addressing the conflict that has become central to the Middle East's balance of power in recent years, between the Islamic Republic of Iran engaged in reaching atomic capabilities and Israel which considers this an existential threat which it seeks to prevent by all the means at its disposal, including the Mossad's secret actions and cyber activities. It's a perfect material for a techno-thriller, and the Israeli series complies with most of the rules of spy movies and will please many fans of the genre. However, the best moments of the eight episodes series of the first season are not necessarily those that relate to action.

We are in the 21st century and it is almost natural that the main heroine of the series is not a super spy but a young Israeli woman born in Iran, named Tamar Rabinian (Niv Sultan), computer expert or in other words hacker, sent on a dangerous cyber sabotage mission in order to paralyze the Iranian anti-aircraft systems. I will leave aside the aspects related to the technical veracity of what we see on the screen, after all it is a fiction film, and as spectators we accept the rules of the genre. What is more important in this series is the situation in which Tamar, alone but enjoying the support of local collaborators and permanent communications with her home bosses, faces the Iran she had left as a child, and the realities of the Islamic Republic, a police state in which women have a different status from the egalitarianism in which she was raised. Her life is permanently in danger, as the infiltration, ingenious in her way has not gone unnoticed, but Tamar decides to continue her mission with the help of some of the regime's opponents. Among them there is Milad (Shervin Alenabi), a local hacker, with whom a romantic story will unfold. Another 'tick-box' of the genre can be checked.

The espionage and action plot itself is quite interesting and well-constructed, including enough upheavals, pursuits, shootings, corpses, double agents and failed missions. The most interesting part, however, seemed to me the confrontation between the two worlds that are political and military enemies, and between the two cultures that have many points in which they differ, but also enough that unite them. For many Israeli viewers, this film is a rare, perhaps even a first visual encounter with the realities of Iran and its capital, a huge metropolis with a diverse population living their lives in a complex political atmosphere. Of course, viewers of Iranian films by excellent directors such as Abbas Kiarostami or Asghar Farhadi already knew this world, but they are not too numerous, their films being intended for the circuit of so-called art cinemas. The filming took place mostly in Athens, and the effect was in my opinion quite realistic and authentic. The international cast, which includes several Iranian actors living in exile, also contributed to this, as well as the flexible and relatively objective approach of the screenwriters. Of course, this is an Israeli film, and at some point there is no doubt about who the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' are, but most of the characters have depth and humanity, and idealizations and demonizations are also avoided. The fight between the secret services cannot be a clean fight, the methods used by both sides include violence and no families or other collateral victims are spared, but there are also human motivations, weaknesses, hesitations and mistakes. These aspects are well integrated into the action, and add interest.

Niv Sultan plays the role of Tamar very well, adding emotion and humanity to a character who is far from the patterns of the genre. Iranian actor Shaun Toub plays the role of the Iranian investigator who is permanently following in Tamar's footsteps, adding a personal dimension to a negative character that is also remote from the usual caricatures and stereotypes. It can be said that he won on screen the duel with Menashe Noy who plays the Israeli leader of the operation. This season had eight episodes. I especially liked the first three or four, which were followed by a few episodes in which repetitions and a few expected twists according to the rules of action series could not be avoided. Episode 7 and especially the final one of the season, with surprises, betrayals, changes of situation and a well-constructed tension fully compensated the fall in the middle. The ending is completely open, it looks like an episode ending rather than a season finale. Leaving the plot at this point, the producers of the series seem to have clearly stated their intentions to make at least one more season. I look forward to it.

Unintentional 'teenage' spy story
cubsat7 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not kidding. The female protagonist, supposedly an award winning Mossad spy, does these things in quick succession while being chased by Iranian police and secret agents: participate in a political protest, roam around in public, compromise her extended family which gives her shelter (even steal one of their passports), go rogue inexplicably, and on a partying spree (yes, hiking, drugs, dancing, sex). This is probably a spy drama coming out as a teenage low IQ fare. From a neutral viewer's standpoint, Iranians, supposedly the bad guys, eventually garner my sympathy. Better luck Mossad, take your Shakira the Teenage partymonger spy back.

As an Iranian I have to admit, this is one of the best series of the world. They could show the strucktures of Tehran very detailed. And the story shows the exact situation between Isreal and Republic Islamic.

High hopes then disappointment again.
iamjustchaz19 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Great beginning, no insults to my intelligence till episode three when the writing falls sadly apart and becomes laughable, as the honed operative starts to make idiotic childlike decisions. You then wonder what the writers were thinking! Safe house refusal, endangering family, attending protest because a boy urges, did not know d-chat was theirs. It just spirals. Was hoping for Homeland brilliance and nuance but this transformation in ep 3 is infuriating after investing three hours. Do better!

Why everyone is stupid in this series?
ilqarilyasov11 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An agent that goes to a protest while she needs to keep a low profile.

A handler who drives around with a car that has his own travel agent's logo on it, commits crimes so he can be easily identified.

A teenage reports the agent that stayed at their house as her mother's guest without thinking the consequences.

Come on... All of these are happening in a totalitarian country. The writers treat the audience like a fool.

And probably most of the 10/10 reviews comes from the production team to compensate the bad reviews to save their faces while negotiating with Apple TV.

Surprisingly, it's quite good
jason-hcj17 October 2020
I had a very low expectation of the shows on Apple TV. Tried a few before, couldn't even finish first 10 minutes. I thought this will be the same, but I was wrong, totally wrong. The show was so intense from the beginning, no dragging at all. The premises of the show are very interesting. All characters's performance are awesome.

Only a few episodes in and I'm blown away
emilykschrader8 July 2020
Absolutely awesome show. Not too violent, not over the top, extremely interesting, and really shows an unusual look at Iran. We would expect to see Iran demonized from an Israeli creator, but actually the show is celebrating Iran and Iranian culture. Really fantastic.

An good espionage series.
Horror_Flick_Fanatic13 November 2020
I found Tehran to be a very good espionage tv series and a bit refreshing. Instead of yet another American/British vs Russian spy thriller, here we have something different. In Tehran, we have the Israeli Mossad verses Iran's Revolutionary Guard spy thriller. What I love even more is that the acting cast is authentic middle eastern actors speaking Persian, Hebrew and some English which adds to a feeling of authenticity. Not a bunch of white guys in robes speaking British English like a Bond film. The actors are all very well cast too and excellent performers.

I don't speak or understand Persian and Hebrew, but I found the English AD audio, not to be confused with the standard English soundtrack very helpful because the original voices remain intact thereby keeping vocal stresses, inflections and tensions compared to a Netflix style dubbing. You get more out of it because the English AD audio has a narrator that speaks over, not in place of the actors voices describing what is spoken and describes the action better.

What I did find at first as an obstacle from enjoying the tv series was the speed at which Persian translates into English. During the first two episodes I had a difficult time keeping up and I watch many foreign films with subtitles. But the subtitles in this show were faster than what I was accustomed to. I don't like voice dubbing because you miss out on the vocal tension, stresses and inflictions of the original voices.

I am not a native speaker to either Persian and Hebrew. But I liked how the show handled this problem for western audiences. Their are two English audio tracks for each episode. Actually, they have two audio tracks for multiple languages including Spanish. The second audio track called the English AD track describes the action and what they are saying but without removing the original voices like a dubbed audio track. Unfortunately, it seems I have to switch on the English AD audio for each episode because it defaults back to the regular non-AD English.

I guess what I am trying to say is FYI, if you are not a native speaker and you find the flashing subtitles to fast. Give the audio English AD track along with the English AD subtitle track a try. I found I was able to keep track of the dialog and enjoy this good spy thriller. You can enjoy the series like a native speaker with this helpful hint.

DON'T FORGET THIS IS FICTION!!! NOT DOCUMANTERY...
aslanatik10 October 2020
I think people forget this is a fiction, not a documantery. And this is entertainment, not a war game between Israel and Iran. And ratings should be given considering this is fiction and just is made for amusement. Relax...

Got sillier as it went along
ShaneMacGowan5 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I find most spy / espionage TV series are full of implausibilities, but this one got a bit ridiculous.

Mossad has cameras in seemingly every Iranian government building and residences of its government officials?

Mossad are happy for one of their agents to hook up with some bloke, and then make him some kind of 'unofficial agent'?

The number of close calls and near-misses became a bit comical.

The relationship between the agent and her boyfriend became irritating.

The car racing scene was just plain dumb, and the slightly random inclusion of Lamborghinis and seemingly endless beautiful people felt like it was trying to tap into the under 25's market.

No Homeland or Fauda
SimpleView110 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A good idea does not always translate in a great story. Decent lead actors and even better production especially filiming for close country. I assume language and details of places are reasonably accurate.

Key issue is the series does not want to rock the boat and please everyone with final outcome.

A promising start in first two episodes quickly decent into drama about fighting individual daemon, family relations, conflicted patriotism and plot holes where trained spy does not make rational decisions.

Nice effort but would have expected better outcome.
