Golden gem

Have always been a sucker for good concepts, and "The Golden Goose" two parter, which happened sadly to be 'Ducktales' final episode, certainly had a great concept. One of the best ones in my opinion of the show. Have always though been quite frustrated when good concepts are not lived up to and there have been many of those instances out there. 'Ducktales' later on was not exempt from this, with a few good concepts not completely fullfilled in the final season, and this is coming from a fan.

"The Golden Goose" is perhaps not one of the very best 'Ducktales' episodes, not as good as the best of Season 1. It is though one of the better and one of the consistent more-than-one-part arcs and for me among the best late episodes. The best 'Ducktales' episode in a while too, perhaps the best since the second part of the "Super Ducktales" arc "Frozen Assets". "The Golden Goose Part 1" is something of a little gem and, after having the later episodes dominated by Bubba (who never clicked with me) and especially the better and more interesting character Fenton (despite a major logic lapse that always bothered me and was never really corrected), it was great to see 'Ducktales' return properly to its roots for the first time in a while. With the feel of Season 1 'Ducktales' when on form.

Its not so good things are actually fairly nit-picky. Occasionally it is a touch contrived.

And there are a few too many food references, which made the Beagles on occasion a little sillier than necessary.

Even if not perfect, the character design not always being smooth, for late 'Ducktales' the animation is quite good. Did like that it was effectively simple in the more intimate parts while being inventive when ought. As said more than once, the music was always a strength even when the show was not on its best form. It doesn't disappoint here and the theme song is ever timeless. For me, "The Golden Goose: Part 1" is easily the best written of the late season episodes. Not just because of the humour being smart and very amusing and more and not just because the more exposition-like scenes don't go too heavy in that, but also for the first time since about Season 2 there is some real emotional depth here. A prime example being the relationship between Dijon and Poupon, which had a good deal of heart, like when at the fountain.

Moreover, the story has its fair share of thrills and intrigue as well as being true in spirit to a lot of the episodes in Season 1. The cliff-hanger is shocking. Dijon is much more interesting than he was in "Metal Mites" and unlike that episode he plays an important prominent that was surprisingly complex. Poupon is quite likeable and Glomgold is at his most cunning in a while while showing great comic timing too. Scrooge in character is 24-carat Scrooge, meant in the best of ways, while the Beagles with the odd minor reservation are awesome, their tourist disguise is a scream. A lot goes on here even when taking a simpler and more intimate approach, yet it doesn't feel rushed. The voice acting all round is great.

Great first part to a great two parter overall. 9/10
