Induction

Industry is a dark thriller about the world of investment banking.

When I saw the trailer I thought it was the new series of The Apprentice. I was expecting Alan Sugar to pop up.

The first episode follows a group of new graduates who are told in no uncertain term that this is a dog eat dog world. Half of the new intake will not survive in six months at Pierpoint & Co's trading floor.

By the end of the first episode there is already a casualty.

There are no surprises with some of the tropes here. It is no secret in this type of work the hours are long with 7.00 am starts and working until late at night.

There are boozy lunches, drugs, sex, partying, backstabbing and trying to gain superiority.

The leading character in the first episode for me was Harper Stern from New York. She had an uncomfortable taxi ride but quickly made a big deal. However there is something in her resume that needs validating.

There were not many likeable characters here but then again it is a shark tank.

Lena Dunham directs

Warning: Spoilers
Induction, the first episode of Industry, is directed by Lena Dunham, and it was produced before the world shut down for the most part in 2020. Anyway, this episode has it all, and no way would be it be screened on NBC, CBS or ABC for sure. That's why HBO is the home of Industry.

I was shocked by the death of Hari (Nabhaan Rizwan) in this episode.

Ali Tate Cutler shines in this episode.

Ken Leung is incredible in Induction, and wonderful to see he's one of the regulars.

Captivating, but lacks focus.

I found the pilot to be a fairly captivating look into the exhausting and (a little too) exciting lives of finance professionals. I don't believe for one second that there's so much sex involved, but the part about the seemingly never ending hours and the near perfect execution demanded of those working in this field feels realistic.

A glaring downside, however, is the lack of focus in this episode as it jumps around between characters and stories without a strong thematic connection other than "this work is hard, look how hard these people have to work".

Even though for the most part I was interested to se what happens next, there are times where I felt I was looking at the clock a little too frequently. Sometimes there's just nothing going on, so pacing was somewhat of an issue.

I also had a problem with what happened to one of the characters, though I won't spoil their story. It was very sudden and unexpected, but not in a good way at all and felt like a twist for twist's sake. Instead of helping enhance the narrative and theme, it was just silly writing.

There seems to be a rather big nod to the "This Life" show here with graduates finding their way in a business.

Like many shows, this opener show has several sexual connotations. These are usually ploys to get people talking about the show and tends to wane after a few episodes and interest in the show slows down too. Hopefully, that won't be the case with this.

One girl does a cam show rather like the ones @scotsdee performs on her Only Fans page.

The story seems to be be a bit wayward, not concentrating on one character for any length of time.

Hopefully, the story will stay strong and more focused but a fair start.

Excellent

The many frantic situations had my heart racing the entire episode. The music & camera work further immersed me into the storylines & characters. I was quite surprised with how good the acting is! It never feels cheesy or overdone, while still looking visually extravagant & dramatic. Cannot wait for the next episode!

Not very good so far

So it's been only one episode. We'll give it another one.

To me this was just another tale of a big company working young people to death. 20 somethings working around the clock, hardly sleeping, never taking care of themselves, devoting almost every waking moment to succeeding with this company, for some strange reason. Can't you find a job with a company that cares?

Like I said, it gets another chance. We'll see.

Kind of boring.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

A drama about a group of young adults entering a market firm which they will experience stressful situations. And working along with others. The script and direction is decent with the characters. The story is slow and dull. Good electronic music score. But a slow and boring episode.

Gut wrenching good

This show is not for kids nor for the faint of heart, hehe. The ensemble is glorious and the class commentary and ambitious work culture is incredibly sharp. On a second watch, I can see exactly how this pilot sells the entire show and it's fantastic. Gus and his very Eton attitude. Harper and the pressure of having something to prove yet effortless ability to hit it out of the park when she needs to.

The drama of the episode hits you over the head and then shoots you a hundred times in the face with its tragedy. It is such a relief to see a show treat it's audience like adults and be confident in what it has to say, and indulgent enough to say it over and over and over again.

I really appreciate the level of intensity shown at these workplaces. More to be seen.
