How do they explain the horse that breathed fire?!
planktonrules25 May 2011
Aside from never really explaining HOW the killer's horse breathed fire, this is a very good episode of "Pushing Daisies". The show begins with what looks like a horseman from hell killing a farrier (a guy who shoes horses). Out of the blue, Emerson is offered a huge sum to investigate the killing--out of the blue because Olive is the client! It seems she used to be a jockey and she cared about the dead guy and would pay to determine what happened. However, upon reviving the corpse, Ned learns that the guy was, according to the victim, killed by a jockey's ghost! When more folks also die the same way, Olive is worried--she has some secret that somehow links her to these victims. However, who the killer is is not who you'd likely expect...

Good acting, a pretty good plot and a weird back story for Olive, the only part of the show that confused me was how the killer made the horse breathe fire...I'm just saying.

Olive hires Emerson
Tweekums17 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As the episode opens we learn more about young Ned's tragic childhood; each day at school he longs for a letter from his father; when it finally arrives it is just a note informing him of a change of address. He runs away from school on Halloween and, dressed as a ghost, visits his father's new home and discovers he has a new family now and Ned isn't part of it. Back in the present a farrier is killed by a horse and Olive suspects foul play. It turns out that Olive was once a champion jockey and the dead man was an old friend and former rival. Emerson takes the case and when Ned questions the victim he says it was the ghost of John Joseph Jacobs, a jockey who died during Olive's last race. When another jockey dies it looks as if everybody who took part in the race is being targeted; especially when it emerges that one of the jockeys sabotages John Joseph Jacobs's equipment and they all swore to keep that a secret. Away from the mystery Ned revisits his past and meets Chuck's aunts; here he learns the hard way that Chuck has been sending them pies.

Five episodes in and there still hasn't been a dud! The opening scenes where we learnt more about Ned's past were quite sad; somehow the tragedy of the past is balanced by the joyfulness of the present day scenes even if they do invariably feature murder! Kristin Chenoweth did a fine job in the role of Olive; it is good to see her character getting a larger role, in the opening episode I thought she would be a secondary character but she has grown in importance to become one of the main characters. The story was a delightfully silly as always with a nice twist at the end. Anna Friel is a delight in the role of Chuck; it was also nice to see her character find a way to see her aunts again even if it will only work one day a year.

Girth is another excellent episode of "Pushing Daises"
tavm1 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
On this special Halloween edition of "Pushing Daises", Olive enlists Emerson's help of finding the murderer of a jockey she used to ride in the races with. She also confronts Chuck about "faking" her death. Meanwhile, Ned, who's startled by Chuck's Halloween decorations since they remind him of the day he found his dad with his new family after his mother's death, goes back first to his now abandoned old house and then to Chuck's aunts' house to relive some of his past. It's here that he finds out about Chuck's pies being sent there. While that's going on, Emerson, Chuck, and Olive go to a long-dead jockey's mom's (Barbara Barrie) home thinking it's his ghost that's responsible for the other jockeys' murders since when he was alive, he was supposed to win the race Olive eventually won...What another excellent episode of "Pushing Daises" this was! And to see Olive and Chuck bond for the first time was fabulous! Nice to see Ms. Barrie on screen again after "Suddenly Susan". One of the jockeys is Hamish Linklater of "The New Adventures of Old Christine". This show is just getting better and funnier. Well worth seeing for anyone with a taste for the whimsically unique.
