Taking the level Indian Family Dramas to New Heights. An Instant Thoughtful Classic which breaks all the codes of typical Family Drama in Bollywood.
SAMTHEBESTEST24 April 2021
Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (2021) : Movie Review -

Family drama is one of the most loved genre in Bollywood since 50s decade. A trend was changed in 70s and 80s after action masala entertainers took over but then post 90s we had record smashing 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun' and blockbusters like 'Hum Saath Saath Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham'. One thing was common in these films that these all films used typical melodrama and ordinary emotions to grab the viewership and that's why common viewer who don't understand much about realistic and artistic Cinema quickly connected to them. Well, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi is finally here to break that code. Finally, Bollywood delivers a high class, though-provoking yet emotional Family Drama for international audience. Remember those foreign language classics we always talk about? Like, Turkish Drama My Father And My Son (2005). So, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi is bollywood's attempt to match that Classic and it has succeeded to deliver on certain level.

In Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, Bauji's entire family comes under one roof for 13 days after he passes away. We get a glimpse of their dynamics, politics and insecurities as each one of them is on their journey to discover their own selves and truth. Seema Pahwa as writer has done an excellent job and has set a milestone in this genre. After many years, people will remember this writing and how it smartly crafted so many elements without using much of cinematic liberty. Yes, because this is how it actually happens in Middle class families. This is the hidden truth of those events which are shameful but still happens regularly. It's a framework classic. There are at least a dozen of frames which are far ahead from the typical filmmaking of bollywood. It's a common knowledge for the society that a Funeral is supposed to take place in sorrowing surroundings, but how many split families actually care about it? Seema Pahwa shows every single misdeed and posture of theirs in the film.

It is so much talent under one roof in Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi. Like mentioned above, it is not that typical commerical family drama to have a superstar in it who can behave unrealistic in any situation to keep his star image alive. Every single artist in the film is immensely talented and choosen for the right role. It would be unfair to name one or two here, all of them are simply brilliant in their roles. The screenplay is engaging and very sensibly written. It follows the right steps while taking the narrative ahead and ends exactly how it should have. All the Dialogues in the film are very common just like any middle family use in daily life. Music is decent but the background score and that theme song is soul stirring.

Coming to the master who executed this Tamaasha, The Seema Pahwa. We all know her as a fantastic actress but after watching this film, people will remember how great director she is. With the debut film she has left 90% of bollywood directors far behind her and her cinematic sense is better than almost 95% of directors working in bollywood today. What a cinematic experience she has gifted us and that too without excluding mainstream factors like family values and emotions. Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi brings those intellegent sentiments which haven't been seen in bollywood in last few years. No more stretching, or else it would reveal many things and spoil it so in short, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi is a never seen before "Satire in Family Drama". Just don't miss it.

Feels like our own family!
radiantfractal25 April 2021
If you are from a Hindu middle-class family, have suffered the loss of a family-member and have been through the traditional 13-day funeral rites, this movie will definitely strike a chord. We have seen many movies and shows about family-gathering in weddings, this movie shows the dynamics of an extended family during the 13 days following a death. There was much I related to and guess everyone will. Also the movie is studded with some of the best Indian actors (not stars) and has a great story and direction by Seema Pahwa.

Thank you Seema ji...for sharing your lovely film with us. You're a very respected actor and a natural filmmaker, proof shows with the beautiful story & the wonderful cast you accrued. Please anyone who appreciates cinema...watch this movie. Detox yourselves after watching Coolie No1. (I managed 15 minutes of that monstrosity of a film).

Its more than a movie.
patel-351665 January 2021
Its a story which every middle class family with dozen of cousins will relate. The movies like this surely needs to be appreciated which sadly will never happen. Where big shot lazy directors and their plastic nepo products are busy making ugly crap remakes, this movie will surely come as a fresh breeze which make you feel that such concept and talent really needs to be in demand atleast once in a month.

stripped of truth (nanga sach) !
MuviFan732 June 2021
Family values among adults do exist like this. Damn don't you people understand that a death has occurred. They say it as samaj- ijjat... to hell with samaj-ijjat! The only proper relations exist in most cases is when you are young and others are adults or when you are an adult & others are kids.

Never ever grow up! Its a trap.

Well Executed
Acting is everything in any kind of movie, yet again proved.

This movie may not be liked by many as in some places it gets slow but having said that, this is one of the best movies made on the subject.

No nonsense, good screen presence and perfect characterization. Well done.

Sometimes it's the stillness and pause that ignites the real meaning within us
ridi-arahan25 April 2021
What worked: So why is this movie a needed art of cinema for Bollywood at this phase of their filmmaking? It's undeniably the team that held this movie together as a fragment of an epitome what's a fine movie relevant to the time and situation. It's one of those very rare movies with an almost complete team. The team deserves an applaud, first and foremost the director/ writer Seema. It's an extraordinary piece of work, very well written and directed. Another applause goes to the music team, and Sagar needs more acclaim and deserves to produce some more work. Another uniqueness of the movie is the cinematography and the use of camera; not so much a lens but a medium to convey the family. It's done quiet cleverly for the most part. And of course the cast, it's a treat to see such fine actors in a project like this. It's very pleasant to see such a beautiful narrative being conveyed with the authenticity and rawness. The movie felt like it has captured the real series of events happening in a home, with much more clarity and sincerity, making it one of the best movie of the year. Like we sometimes say, it's a journey not a reel, and it does makes the viewers feel the touch that it promises to deliver. One of the best things of the movie is the screenplay that's not tilted to help us take our sides but just presenting it the way in a more real and bitter manner rather than just making it a predictable dilemma.

What did not work: Of course some distractions could have been cut down or eliminated, only keeping the ones that conveyed the narrative because there is so much going on in the movie.

Final verdict: highly recommended.

so much talent under one roof
beevenkat3 January 2021
I concluded 2020 with a fulfilling film called #RamprasadKiTehrvi. When a man dies, his entire family comes together to perform the last rites. But do they genuinely participate in the ceremonies or do they just meet and gossip? There r many interesting characters - the dead man's wife who narrates the same story enthusiastically to every visitor - the young man who lusts after his aunt - the uncle who monopolizes the toilet - the daughter in law who aspires to be an actor. Kudos to director seema pahwa for bringing so much talent under one roof. This film needs ur love n support, do watch it in theatres. Rating 3/5.

HOME RUN
devburmansaptarshi3 January 2021
Seema Pahwa has taken a script and moulded it in such a way that it felt like I am peeking through the window and watching a family drama. The performances felt astoundingly real, such relatable performances. Ramprasad ki tehrvi may be slow watch, but it entices you from the beginning. By far the best debut directoral movie in Bollywood

Not for everyone, but watch if you're looking for something different.
TreeFiddy532 May 2021
The movie explores human actions and individualism, even if it's at a funeral. Be it gossiping, competing to see who cares the most, haggling for discounts, infighting, etc., things that you'd see if real life make up most of the movie.

A part of me felt that it got a little dramatic here and there, some you might have actually seen all this play out. There is humor, emotion, sense of grieving and dealing with loss, this movie has a lot going but it's all told in a good way.

The cast has a great set of actors and they do a kickass job! The movie starts off slow but you can tell that the pacing was deliberate. This movie isn't for everyone, you should check this out if you're looking for something different.

Warning: Spoilers
Dark comedy is definitely a good genre. This movie consists of wonderfully poised dark comedy with a harsh reality of big indian families and their good old emotional attachment.

A coffee table book turned into a movie
reetonimdb3 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is real. The way it takes in the small details of everyday life and puts it on camera is charming. The way the characters talk and their little (and big) frustrations with life and each other is very relatable. I have seen many families like this before. The directing is also very well done. Lucknow is a beautiful city.

There is not much plot or character development though. Stories require conflict and some sort of a resolution. We never find out what happened with Seema and Nishant in Mumbai. There are supposedly big secrets behind the scene but no one says them out loud and tries to resolve any issues. You are left none the wiser at the end of the movie. I mean if the point was to portray middle class life then a series of photographs in a coffee table book would have done the trick.

Also I don't get why nishant was seen as representing his father in the flashbacks. It was creepy. Overall an interesting portrayal of the mundane.

Unwieldy ensamble cast
dibeyendu9 May 2021
One can't help but compare this movie with Pagglait, which also revolves around a funeral and was released around the same time. In fact, it seems like both the movies were shot in the same old house in Lucknow. Alas, Ramprsad ki Tehrvi doesn't quite measure up. It has two many characters and it's really hard to keep track of who is who. Ramprasad (Nasseer in a brief role) dies before the opening credits and the rest of the movie is about how his family comes together for the 13-day funeral ceremony. Ramprasad' has four sons and one daughter and all of them are lovable losers. Then there are the wives and the children. And there's a nasty mamaji, who stinks up the toilet. It's hard to empathise with, let alone like, any of them. The script is very weak and it seems the writer is relying on Indian viewers to recognise these character types and imagine their back stories. But veteran actress Seema Pahwa has brought together quite a stellar cast of actors for her directorial debut and that makes the movie watchable. At the same time, it seems such a waste of talent.
