Dorothy's punctured romance
ShadeGrenade20 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Cyril cannot believe it when a handsome Spanish gentleman by the name 'Jose' asks Dorothy for a date. Not trusting foreigners, he is deeply suspicious of Jose's motives. Nevertheless, with some help from 'Maria' ( Olga Lowe ), Dorothy gets glammed up for her big night out. But a nasty surprise awaits her...

A nice episode that puts the talented Pat Coombs centre stage. 'Jose' is played by Ricardo Montez, who appeared the previous season as a doctor. He was well cast as a charming ladies' man. During the run of 'Mind Your Language', the actor was showered with proposals of marriage from admiring female viewers.

Of course Jose is not interested in having Dorothy as a lover. He just wants a nanny to take care of his children while he and his wife are on holiday. Her heartbreak is movingly conveyed.

Funniest moment - Dorothy emerging from her room looking glamorous!

On an unrelated note, I watched last night a BBC documentary about Stanley Baxter. It was very good, apart from the contribution of a man who shall remain nameless ( I would not want to embarrass him ) who claimed Stanley's work was not relevant to the modern world. So what? Chaplin, Keaton, Langdon, Laurel and Hardy, W. C. Fields' films don't look like they were made yesterday but they are still funny. Truly great comedy transcends the time barrier.
