Keep Those Umbrellas Handy, Even If It Doesn't Rain
ccthemovieman-122 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
An umbrella used as a fake bone in a man's body?

Yup, that's part of yet another bizarre opening scene. CSI is tremendous at doing that. Here, Medical Examiner "Doc Robbins" has a dead man who has pipes for bones and an umbrella for another bone. (I guess he ran out of pipes.) The body also has been completely stapled up. It appears most of his body parts, including his bones, are missing.

That's all part of a mortuary/body parts scam, which is one of the stories here.

The second story involves a married lady found dead in her dwelling. She had been seeing a younger man in a "relationship" escort service. That's not the normal "escort service:" this is one without any sex, just a relationship. The ending to this story is a shocker.

Much of the middle segment of this episode is just so-so but it really picks up with some interesting revelations in the last dozen minutes. The man who harvests the illegal body parts is played by veteran Gordon Clapp, a very good actor who received notoriety as "Det. Greg Medavoy" in "NYPD Blue."

Finally, in the end, we have another mystery. Apparently, "Keppler" has some ghosts in his past. I assume, with series star "Grissom" coming back in another two weeks, that this personal problem of Keppler's will be dealt with next week.

Body Parts and More

A body is found completely burned. When it is brought to the lab it turns out his skeletal bones have been replaced by pipes, boards, and even an umbrella. This leads to an investigation into the marketing of body parts. A second case has to do with the death of a middle aged woman who goes to a place where a man can make her dreams come true if she pays enough. Why she dies is quite interesting.

Bones, Tissues and Motherhood

When the ex-con Ross Neddy is found burned to death in his weld shop, his body is brought to the autopsy. Dr. Robbins and Keppler sees in the X-ray that many bones have been replaced by PVC pipes and an umbrella. The coroner explains to Keppler, Nick and Greg that sometimes pipe is used to replace donated bones. When Keppler checks the fingerprints of the dead body, he learn that the body belongs to Roger Lapinsky, who died sometime ago. When they make the exhumation of Lapinsky, his coffin is empty. Now they are looking for Ross to know what happened to Lapinsky's body. Meanwhile, Capt. Brass, Catherine, Sara and Warrick investigate the murder of Margo Dorton, who was found dead by her husband. Her car key has a valet ticket from the nightclub Over-Under Cabaret, and she used to meet with a escort The team uses the evidences and interviews suspects, coming out to a surprising revelation.

"Meet Market" is another great episode of "CSI", with two great segments. The lead one, of the burned body, has many twists and the surprising information that bones and tissues are trafficked, or even legally sold. Many viewers probably did not know this scheme, since only organs are usually shown in the news and movies and series. The second segment is dramatic, when the CSI investigators discover the killer of Margo. My vote is eight.
