Looney Tunes' Effort Into WWII
ccthemovieman-131 October 2007
If you watched the recent Ken Burns documentaries on World War II, you know how much America - all its citizens and businesses - went to bat in a unified effort to win that war. Well, the makers of the famous Looney Tunes cartoons put in their fair share, too. That is documented in this behind-the-scenes featurette on the Golden Collection Volume Three disc 4 DVD set.

The topics of rationing, blackouts, being drafted, working in a Defense Plant, selling bonds and, of course, actually participating as soldiers were all part of a number of Looney Tunes during the period of the early-to-mid 1940s.

It's pointed out by several historians, critics and directors that some of the cartoons were made just for soldiers, such as "Pvt. Snafu." They believe that this led to much more brassier, bolder and edgier cartoons, that WWII actually helped propel cartoons into their "golden age" by the mid '40s.

Also, writer-producer Paul Dini and others comment how "Bugs Bunny captured the American spirit so clearly."

I just saw a preview today for the remake of . . .
oscaralbert25 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
. . . BIRTH OF A NATION, and this adaptation of D.W. Griffiths' Classic Film seems almost as Divergent as the 2016 BEN-HUR is from the two earlier feature flick versions of Lew Wallace's yarn (or from the Holy Bible, for that matter). Similarly, the pack of 100% Lily White Guys participating in LOONEY TUNES GO TO WAR! may as well be talking about the Revolutionary War or Vietnam than the Good War of America versus the Trump-like Fascists. The animated shorts clips chosen to illustrate the supposed theme of this Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume 3, Disc 4 "Bonus Feature" are as likely to refer to the War for America's Independence as to the War to Defeat Henry Ford's, Charles Lindbergh's, Father Charles Edward Coughlin's, and the Rest of the Anti-Semite Michigan Mafia's Overseas Buddies (not to mention that Honorary Wolverine, Buckeye Native Prescott Bush). Since none of the bozos prattling on here appear to have ever set foot East of Culver City, it's small wonder that their scope seems narrow and myopic.
