What's not to like?

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 405 is one of the most exciting yet. The battle between Angelique and Barnabas comes to a physical head; the former gets shot and wounded, the latter cursed. There's a bat attack involving a proper bat, not just a drawing on the screen, and lots of high drama and conflict. What's not to like?

I have made up my mind to leave Collingwood, and nothing that you or anybody else can say can stop me.

Warning: Spoilers
Yes, Josette, leave Collinwood before it's too late, and do not return. The wrath of Angelique is hidden behind her sweet smile, and certainly, her innocent look hides a woman of great evil. Abigail is upset when she finds out that the Countess and Josette are leaving, wanting them to stay to testify in the trial against Victoria. Barnabas promises Josette that he will meet her in Boston, and it's obviously clear that he has a plan to get rid of Angelique. It's a change of attitude for Abigail towards Angelique as she wants to confirm that Angelique will testify in the trial against Victoria, and Angelique is shocked when she hears that Josette and the counters are leaving. The look of love that used to come out of Angelique's eyes towards Barnabas has now changed to hate. A great special effect changes the portrait of Angelique over the fireplace like the pictures in Disney's Haunted Mansion. As they say, the honeymoon is over.

You may not be able to get a man with a gun, but can you get rid of a witch with one? That becomes the question, especially when Angelique puts the pins back into Sarah's doll. This leads to a violent twist, and probably the greatest moment in the show's history, a curse that will change the course of Barnabas's life. The camera work is absolutely superb, moving in for a near close-up as if it knows that this is the moment, one that if you have not seen before will send shivers down your spine. It is also probably one of the greatest moments in daytime history, one that will never be forgotten.

One of the highlights of the entire series

Warning: Spoilers
I mentioned in a previous review that I remembered watching the 1795 sequence back in 1976, when our local ABC affiliate used to air Dark Shadows in the afternoon, after school, and that with the introduction of Lara Parker and the Angelique character, I developed my first boyhood crush.

When I viewed episode 405 as a 10-year old, I found the whole thing thrilling and frightening, and I actually remember crying during the climatic scene between Angelique and Barnabas, resulting in Angelique getting shot and Barnabas being permanently cursed. Would Angelique survive? Was that the end of Lara Parker?

Watching this episode now as a middle-aged man, I am still enthralled by the performances but I didn't shed any tears. Dark Shadows was peaking during this time. Angelique was just pure evil and this episode really is a turning point for Barnabas and his future...and when one thinks about what we know of him in present-day 1968, it really opens up a floodgate of sympathy for the character.

One of the greatest episodes in the history of Dark Shadows.
