Elizabeth wants a divorce, and the husband could be dead!
mark.waltz28 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The return of Elizabeth's lawyer Richard (played by the future Mr. Phoebe Tyler of "All My Children" in his last appearance) marks the announcement that Liz wants a divorce, even though there are hints that Paul Stoddard is in the locked room in the basement. Jason of course intrudes and acts like lord of the manor even though he is an obvious intruder. Pompous Roger and vengeful Burke don't seem as bad when compared to Jason, but Roger will obviously blow a gasket when he learns what Liz is being blackmailed to do. But there is a nice moment between Roger and Elizabeth before he finds out.

This focus on the Collins family is a very good episode with a tense confrontation between Roger and Jason. You can feel the hatred between the two men, and Louis Edmunds and Dennis Patrick obviously delight in the way they get to snark at each other. Edmunds is a special treat as his nose is so far in the air even when he is being noble. There's not much Gothic intrigue outside the gloomy Collins house, but typical soap opera elements are important to remind us of the intense family elements. Nancy Barrett and Alexandra Moltke are also there, supporting the older actors, with Barrett as Carolyn particularly important.

Hateful

Warning: Spoilers
The ever-sleazy Jason proves especially hateful in this episode, which sees him tightening the screws ever tighter in his pursuit of Elizabeth. The other characters appear flummoxed by the whole situation, and who can blame them? There's pure evil here, and it's not from Barnabas for a change.
