unexpected thrills, subtle undercurrents
wrldlygrrl8 July 2006
I really enjoyed the unexpected storyline that Game Shop has. From the beginning, I was glued to the screen, wondering where this movie was taking me. From the beginning, for sure I had no idea what was going to happen. I was manipulated (I LOVE THAT IN A MOVIE!), jerked up and then not let down, and a little jostled as I was finally released. The music controlled every beat of my heart. The actors were intense and I loved seeing Natasha Reshetnikova again! The director, Yuri Shapochka, has a fine eye for detail, mixing a subtle undercurrent of reality with a curious sense of surreality. I do not think I have ever seen a movie quite like this one. Thriller? Hmmm. Suspense? Hmmm. A winner? Yes.

Excellent visual concept

Enjoyed it very much. Amazing technical quality, i thought. Design, composition, lighting - wonderfully done.

The cast plays with considerable tranquility, performing the most absurd scenes with a brilliant realism. When combined with bizarre story, the effect is a worrying yet humorous dialogue on aggravated taste both real and imagined, and with many levels of accompanying ideas along the way. Game Shop is not for those who seek a shipshape plot line with straightforward meanings. It's a nice little package as it is.... and visually STUNNING.

If you enjoy independent cinema, and particularly if you enjoy the intelligent and the unusual, then consider this short film. I highly recommend it!

Perfect nightmare

Okay, I am subjective. I know Yuri very well and I even gave feedback on the scripts before it was shot and produced. But.. Still, here's my two cents.

I believe that the film is a perfect nightmare. It lasts only 3 minutes, but has a much greater perception of depth and feels like a much bigger piece. It takes you to the limit of your thought and then kicks you over that limit without hesitation. Most of the time, your logical reasoning is in total disarray, yet the cohesive scenic vision is captivating and drawing you in. Some scenes are disturbing and the scent of hope is mixed with the complete hopelessness, bound with the pulsating rage of violence.

Despite no single word being uttered, character interactions are deeply intimate and even sexual in a Freudian way. Like I said, it's a perfect nightmare.
