The garage is a man's domain, or it is by tradition. Tim Taylor's garage is where he likes to go and spend quality time with his new best friend: his hot rod chassis. Today, he found a suitable steering column to install in that bad boy, and man, was he in for a surprise when he went into the garage. Jill had set up her pottery wheel right by the door, causing Tim to bash his knee on it. Why the garage, why not the basement? Because Jill doesn't wanna work down there. She was told it would be beneficial to work in an environment with lots of creativity, i.e. the garage. Tim disagrees and says she should work in the basement, so he unsuccessfully tries to move the wheel. When that fails, he decides to just live with it. Now, it's on to Tool Time, and if you've been wondering why Tim in the host of the show and not Al who is clearly more competent, your question will be answered in this episode. Today they demonstrate drawer installation. Somebody forgot to put stoppers on the drawer, sending it flying. Tim was quick to blame Al, who pointed out the stoppers was Tim's job, but the Tool Man says it was Al's job to check his work and belittles him to the audience. This didn't sit well with Al, who confronted Tim after the show. Basically, he's upset because Al takes the work seriously and Tim makes a joke out of everything. Al feels anybody could do Tim's job, since he sees it as doing nothing but telling bad jokes and screwing up all the time. Tim gets an idea to teach Al a lesson and suggests that on the next show, they switch roles. Al can host and Tim will be the assistant, see how well that works.

Jill has meanwhile turned her half of the garage into a woman's domain, heavily scented by potpourri, and she cranks up the opera music while Tim tries to weld in peace. Finally, he speaks up, saying that Jill is intruding, but she won't listen. In the process, Tim accidentally ruins one of her clay pots. Obviously she doesn't take the hint, because she next sets up a garage use time-table. Tim objects and Jill gets overly defensive, thinking Tim's being all chauvinistic and controlling... what did he ever see in this woman? But now, on to Tool Time with Al "The Tool Man" Borland, decked out in a shirt, cap and loud tie, and Tim "The Assistant Man" Taylor, decked out in flannel. Al bumbles and stumbles his way around hosting the show, telling jokes that are far worse than Tim's and even telling an unrelated anecdote about how he tried to misuse a 3-for-1 sale. Not one laugh is uttered. Al was sinking like the Titanic. Fortunately, Tim jumped in to bail him out by staging an accident. Al has apparently learned his lesson, and THIS is why Tim is the host, and not him. It's not enough to be fully competent in a job, Al has the competency, but for hosting a show, you need confidence, personality, charisma, where Tim succeeds. The problem at home is still persisting, so Tim talks to Wilson, who suggests the problem may be intimacy, so Tim deduces she wants to be in the garage to be near him. However, Jill says her reasoning for taking up pottery was to get AWAY from Tim... yeah, so setting up in the garage was probably a bad idea.

I think we can all agree that Jill was clearly at fault in this episode. She just barges in to where Tim has set up his own personal space, then gets mad at him when he tries to object. I say Tim was right in this instance, and I'm not just siding with him because I'm a man, I viewed the situation objectively. Let's say, Jill set up her own personal space in the basement, and then Tim barged in to store some more tools. Tim would be wrong there. First come, first serve. I also liked the Tool Time role reversal with Al trying to host. This was before they fleshed out Al's character, so at this point he was just a serious, straight- man, acting as Tim's polar opposite, and they weren't as good of friends at this point. But again, if you've ever wondered why Tim is in charge of the show and not Al, this episode gives you the answer. However, Al gets his chance in the spotlight again in Season 3's "Too Many Cooks" where he hosts a cooking show and Tim acts as his assistant. He does a much better job there.
