Mayo and the team investigate the apparent murder of Marian Dove, the matriarch of a family-owned glass business. Working late one night, Marian is lured onto the shop floor where someone arranges for a glass chandelier to drop onto her. Her son-in-law Ken is the managing director of the firm and her sister Gwen's husband Robert Bainbridge also works there. They all assume they will inherit something but are stunned when her recently revised will names Steven Marshall, the son she gave up for adoption when she gave birth to him at age 17, as her sole beneficiary. The family solicitor Mr.Crytch was also in line for a sizable portion of the estate under the old will. A DNA test establishes the identity of Marshall's father and leads directly to the killer.

Mayo and the team investigate the apparent murder of Philip Barker who is found in a nice residential neighborhood face down in the back garden of a posh house owned by nouveau riche Dermot and Laurie Voss. The dead man had been away and his wife thought he was still there. She has no idea what he might have been doing in the neighborhood where he was found but does admit that he was something of a philanderer. The post-mortem reveals that he had actually drowned in a puddled in the garden rather than from the blow to the head. It turns out that one of the neighbors, Faith Loxley, also has a connection to Croatia. When a second body is found, this time in the graveyard, it points to Faith's sister, Hope Hendrick. It also seems that Dermot Voss had a business relationship with him. It turns out that lust and jealousy is at the root of the crimes. Alex meanwhile decides to have a house warming but party but isn't sure if she should invite her boss - and former boyfriend - DI Mayo or whether he would come if he did get an invite.

DI Gil Mayo and the team are on the case when Cecil Willard is found, by the aptly named Reverend Beaver, clubbed to death with a large brass candle in the church. The elderly gentleman was wheelchair-bound after having suffered a stroke. He was cared for by his daughter Laura and she in turn is having a affair with the married Marcus Illingworth. Cecil didn't like Illingworth going out with his daughter and was opposed to him being promoted at Serenity Lodge Residential home, a residence facility for the elderly, where he was Illingworth's boss. Early on the day of his death, he met with Sebastian Oliver, a friend of the family who wanted to tell him that he was about to marry Ellie Waterstone. Cecil's protégé at the lodge was Janet Reece who happens to be Sebastian's ex-girlfriend. Cecil also had another appointment the morning of his death with someone named Sara. Cecil was also upset with his next door neighbors who were feeding badgers. After killing a badger on his property, he started to receive anonymous threats. Soon afterward, one of the these possible suspects is found dead but Mayo is convinced that the solution lies in the nursing home itself.

DI Mayo and the team investigate the murder of Ash Fellowes, an estate agent who is found murdered in an empty house on the day of his wedding. That property was listed for sale by his main rival, Gina Harper and his last phone call was made to Gina's husband Rupert who is conveniently away in London. Mayo however finds Gina's reaction as well as that of her son Lucas, also a member of the estate company, rather odd and suspects one of them may have had something to do with Ash's death. Another dead body leads to the discovery of business fraud. Meanwhile, Mayo continues to resist any suggestion that he is attracted to DS Alex Jones.
