TIGHTROPE – The Patsy – 1959

This one is the 9th episode of 1959-60 undercover cop series, TIGHTROPE. The series ran for a total of 37 episodes and starred Mike Connors in the lead role. Connors is a deep undercover cop who is assigned to various cities across the country on tough cases.

Mike Connors is called in to help break up a big city rackets mob. The mob handles all the gambling and numbers business in town. The locals though have no idea who the man at the top is. They know that Ted De Corsia is the number two man, but that is it.

Connors decides to see what he can do by being a pain to the mob. He hits a mob numbers runner, James Westerfield, and takes the day's cash. This gets the attention of De Corsia and his bunch. They really get a bee in the bonnet when Connors hits a second runner for another big haul.

Connors then takes the 15 large and spends it at one of De Corcia's gambling clubs. Westerfield tells De Corcia that Connors is the man who robbed him. De Corcia does not believe that anyone would have the nerve to pull a job, and then spend the cash here.

Needless to say the mob finally tumbles to Connors and puts the grab on him. Connors says he was just proving a point. He showed the mob how loose their security was. De Corcia passes this info to his boss, Vaughn Taylor. Taylor has Connors brought to him for a talk.

Connors soon impresses Taylor with several ideas to boost revenue. He has Connors join in on a million dollar heist of some bonds. The robbery happens and the local Police play their part and gobble up Taylor, De Corcia and the rest of the mob. James Westerfield decides to turn States Evidence and tell all he knows. Connors is now off for his next assignment.

The series was produced by film noir vet, Russell Rouse. The two-time Oscar nominated, one time winner, wrote 36 of the 37 episodes. He also directed several of them.
