Pete chooses some bad friends
Rcwilkinson12327 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Searching for an identity, Pete Ross finds himself mixed up with the wrong crowd in "Velocity."

Upset that he cannot truly excel at anything, unlike Clark, Pete Ross gets involved with illegal street racing. Clark discovers that Pete has been doing this for months. Pete is on a long winning streak, when his new friend Jason Dante tells Pete to throw a race against him. Pete uses the kryptonite fuel to win anyway, causing Dante to lose $20,000 on a bet. Dante threatens Pete's life if Pete cannot repay the money. Pete, knowing what incredible things Clark can do, asks a favor from Clark, even though it is ethically wrong.

I have to give kudos to this episode for featuring the under-utilized Sam Jones III as Pete as the main character, and for putting Clark in a precarious situation of wanting to help his friend, but having to use his abilities for the wrong reasons to do it.

3x13 - Rewatch (Pete-centric)
DCSassyQueen21 July 2016
At the end of the last episode, Jonathan Kent had a heart attack & he is in the hospital so naturally Clark blames himself.

Adam was turning into a vampire this episode with his red tear drops.

Chloe & Lex are low-key teaming up to research Adam because something about him is not adding up.

Pete finds a new hobby, drag-racing, & Clark does not approve.

Everything was great about this episode except anything Pete- related. He is just an uninteresting character.

Clark is a sucker for his friends being in distress.

Pete-centric episode that missed the mark
yochebel4 May 2023
Season 3 has a lot of great episodes, but this isn't one of them and is definitely one of the weak links of the season.

This episode is a perfect example of the writers not knowing what to do with Pete. Pete has a lot of potential as a character, especially as he was the only one outside the Kent family that knows the 'secret'. While I understand the writers were trying to illustrate the complexities and human consequences of knowing Clark's secret, I still feel it's a shame they chose this route for Pete.

Pete seemed out of character in the first half of the episode, and I wasn't believing the friendship between Clark and Pete was as strong as they always say it is.

That being said, the episode isn't completely unwatchable. Sam Jones' acted really well for what he was given. Adam's storyline isn't riveting but it is nice to see a reoccurring character outside the main cast and usual 'freak of the week'.

Wounded by a Friend
claudio_carvalho12 May 2006
While returning home after leaving Jonathan Kent in the hospital recovering from a heart attack, the truck of Martha and Clark is almost his by two cars racing in the road. For the greatest surprise and deception of Clark, one of the pilots is Pete Ross, who has become friend of the bad element Jason Dante (Ryan Merriman). Pete does not accept Clark's advice and gets into serious trouble. Meanwhile, Lex investigates the prominent Dr. Lia Teng (Françoise Yip) about her research of blood platelet with Adam Wright, and Lana feels threatened by the mysterious dark secret of Adam.

In "Velocity", Clark Kent finds that the necessary attitudes in life sometimes do not stay in the black or white limits of morality and correctness, but in the gray zone. He becomes wounded with the wrong things he does to help Pete. I am curious with the interest of Lex Luthor in the research of Dr. Teng and the secret of Adam. My vote is nine.

Weakest Episode of Season 3
spasek24 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, every season has its "turkey" episode. Some have more than one. And "Velocity" is Season 3's turkey.

Pete Ross is a character that simply was never developed to the extent of Chloe and Lana, even though in the comics, he's one of Clark's closest friends. Frankly, the Chloe and Lana storylines always took up more space, and they have always been much more interesting than any of the few Pete-centered ones. When Pete left the show by the end of this episode, I daresay that not many people missed the character. I didn't.

In this episode, Pete turns in his worst performance yet, coming across as a sniveling, whiney kid. Taking up drag-racing with the wrong crowd, Pete is quickly in over his head and goes to Clark, begging him to get him the $20,000 that is owed. Never mind that his mother is a judge and could easily find a way to help him, he asks Clark to use his abilities to get him the money.

When Clark walks away from him at the end of the episode, I was proud that Clark was hurt that Pete would disrespect him in such a fashion, thus proving that Pete isn't the best person to be keeping Clark's secret identity (that person would end up being Chloe).

The best part of this episode was the Lex and Lana story arcs. Lex finds out more information about Adam and the drugs he's been taking, and Lana is suddenly threatened by Adam if she reveals what she's found about him. The episode should have focused on those two stories and left the Pete story by the side of the road where it belonged.

I'm sorry, but this episode is stupid.

Warning: Spoilers
Whisper, Delete, Hereafter, all good. But I guess they had to make a false step. Velocity is probably the worst Smallville episode. This Dante guy is a joke, and you don't believe for a second this little boy can be such a danger to society. Then Pete is afraid of that guy?! After all the krypto monsters he encountered? Give me a break. And oh surprise, just as Clark was about to save the day. He gets knocked down by kryptonite. At least we learn more about Adam. And Lex's hidden agendas. But on top of being a silly nod at the Fast & Furious series, this episode is full of cringeworthy moments. And bad music, if you count out Ryan Adams rendition of « Wonderwall ».
