Shelley is still struggling with the bills and realises that he and Fran need to economize. Toasted cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner for example.

However on night out with an old university friend called Den who has popped down to see him. Shelley discovers that hippie layabout is now a bit of a Hooray Henry in the media marketing world. As Fran notes he was good at making money even at university.

It is expensive cocktails in a new age bar. They don't do English beer. The kind of thing that was coming into London just in time for Yuppies.

Shelley's pride means that he refuses to let Den pay for the drinks which turns out to be an expensive mistake.

Janet Fielding who played Tegan in Doctor Who plays the bar waitress.

The episode was written by Guy Jenkin. He went on to write for Drop the Dead Donkey and Outnumbered. He seems to have spotted that London was changing with new age money.
