The show's only episode without both Kramer and George is still an early classic, courtesy of Larry David's fantastic script
SLionsCricketreviews12 February 2018
I think this is a very good episode and just like with the two previous episodes of this season, "The Pen" worked surprisingly better for me a second time around. That said, this might be my least favourite of the three episodes so far purely for the fact that it is missing another additional zany element to this episode that would have made it even more dynamic. 'Seinfeld' has already experienced itself without Kramer in the acclaimed "The Chinese Restaurant" and while George somewhat tempered what otherwise could have been a particularly detrimental element to that episode, he too is unfortunately missing in this episode. "The Pen" features neither Kramer, nor George, arguably the two most memorable and dynamic characters whose sheer presence pretty much elevates any episode.

Thankfully, we have the Florida characters coming in to cover some necessary ground. Jerry's parents are absolutely a delight, Jack Klompus who is introduced here and Uncle Leo too makes a return. Each of these characters adds a particularly valuable dynamic to the episode that makes it an often hilarious ride but George and Kramer are such unique and irreplaceable entities to 'Seinfeld' that no compensation feels like enough compensation. It's just a pity given how good Larry David's screenplay here is that the Kramer and/or George element could not be integrated.

All that aside, this is an extremely funny episode. It largely centres on a pen, as the title would have you believe, and the episode pulls it off spectacularly. More and more, 'Seinfeld' is becoming "a show about nothing" even if creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld did not necessarily intend for the show to earn itself that label. It is just abundantly clear watching the first three episodes of this season, and "The Pen" confirms this belief even further, that 'Seinfeld' is finally finding its stride. The way in which Klompus' astronaut pen weaves in and out of the episode's narrative is particularly funny, as is Elaine's dilemma in this episode after she injures her back sleeping on the Seinfelds' sofa bed. Nothing feels particularly expendable within this twenty two minute episode and almost everything has that 'punch' factor. A notable example of this would be the episode beginning with Morty Seinfeld complaining about the missing scotch tape and even how effortlessly and naturally that pays off, almost not calling attention to itself. This is classic 'Seinfeld', even if it is 'Seinfeld' without neither George nor Kramer.

I adore "The Pen". Where the episode may not have quite the same pacing or energy of the previous episodes for my money, the writing is particularly strong and it needed to be strong if the episode were to work without both Kramer and George. Jason Alexander, as is particularly known now, was especially infuriated to have been left out of this episode that he threatened to quit if his character were ever written out of another episode. George Costanza was based on Larry David and Jason Alexander seemingly channelled his inner Larry David. It has now come full circle.

Strangers in a Strange Land

Jerry and Elaine go to Florida to visit his parents who live in a retirement community. They are dropped in the middle of some hilarious dynamics. First of all, it is horribly hot and the old folks won't use the air conditioner. Then there is a brouhaha over an astronaut pen that can write upside down. Finally, Elaine sleeps on a hide-a-bed and that awful bar gives her a horrible back problem. It is a week from hell. And so wonderful. We also get to meet a couple characters who will appear again.

A Trip to Some Stifleing Paradise
Antoine_Bugleboy17 December 2006
Single Favorite Line: (Elaine, in misery on the convertible sofa, after a 360o horizontal flip of extreme discomfort): "I'm sweetin' here...I'm in bed! SWEETING!"

Notable Guest Stars: Barney Martin (as Monty, the Indian-Pen-Giver), Liz Sheridan (as Helen Seinfeld), Sandy Baron (as Jack Seinfeld), Ann Guilbert (as Del Boca Vista neighbor, Evelyn), and Len Lesser (as uncle Leo)

Memorable Exchange: (at Kitchen Table, Pa Seinfeld gives directions to son for the Scuba Diving launch) Jack: "Stay on the 95 South, to Biscaine Blvd., then you make a left turn -put your blinker on immediately, there's an a-buuut-meant there. Then your going to merge over carefully, but stay on Biscaine --DON'T GET OFF BISCAINE" - Jerry: (nodding head)"Stay. On. Biscaine" - Helen: "Your going underwater?!" - Jerry: "Yes, generally, that is where scuba diving is done." - Helen: "What do you want to go under water for!--What's down there that's so special?" - Jerry: "Whats so special up here?"

Key Topics: *Florida Retirement Communities * Parents * Generosity (false) *Guilty Acquiescence *Heat

Part I Didn't Like: hard to find fault with this super-tight episode, but - What? No phone call to Kramer or George -- what were they up to ?

Extra Nice Touch: The challenge to make a very satisfying episode, sans Jason Alexander or Michael Richards, is met admirably, thanks to the wonderful volleys of dialogue, to do mostly with the petty politics of Condo Culture Retirees!

7 of 10 --nice, interesting change of tone and place

Pure, irresistible nonsense
MaxBorg8910 April 2008
That Seinfeld's strength came mainly from its observational humor, which covered every possible topic, no matter how trivial, became a real benchmark from Season Three onwards. The Pen, in particular, shows exactly how insane the program's wit could become.

Unusually, the episode doesn't take place in New York. Instead, it's all the way down to Florida, where Jerry's parents live. Since there will be a dinner in honor of the old man, Jerry decides to pay a visit, and takes Elaine with him. Once there, he engages in a casual conversation with a neighbor regarding an "astronaut pen", which he is later given as a gift. The weekend rapidly deteriorates starting with the next morning, when the neighbor in question begins to insist the pen be returned.

A pen. That's right, a pen. With the notable exception of Tarantino, no one would be able to center a whole movie around that subject without hitting a narrative dead end. Fortunately this is TV comedy, where only 22 minutes are required, and Larry David, who wrote this story, is a genius in making the most boring item the core of a perfect gag mechanism, which is why the scenes where Jerry and everyone else argue about the pen are as hilarious as Elaine and Morty Seinfeld experiencing the side effects of a rather uncomfortable couch.

Sure, some viewers might be turned off by the complete absence of Kramer (who was missing in The Chinese Restaurant too) and George (a fact that irritated Jason Alexander so much he threatened to quit unless he was included in every other show, even in a one-scene gig), but come on, really, who needs them when we've got Elaine spoofing Marlon Brando's epic "Stellaaaaaa!" in a way not even The Simpsons would have gotten away with? It's absolute nonsense, from start to finish, but that's why it's so darn funny.

Only Show Without George and Kramer
trixon5128 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Kramer and George make Seinfeld as funny as it is, and at the same time, I'm not taking anything away from Elaine or Jerry. This episode takes place at Jerry's parents condo in Florida, and it is the only episode without Kramer or George, so naturally, I would've thought that it would be very tough to match the caliber of other episodes. Ironically, after seeing this episode, it is definitely in my top 10 of Seinfeld episodes, and probably in my top 5 (if I made a list). It was this episode, more than almost any of them, that proved how successful a show (let alone a episode) about nothing could be. The episode is really all about Jack Klompus's astronaut pen and "how it writes upside down". Jerry expressed interest in the pen and this lead to Jack forcibly giving Jerry the pen. This might as well caused mass hysteria in their community, with everyone arguing about Jerry taking Jack's pen, but others saying that Jack gave him the pen. There's much more to the episode, but my whole point of writing this review on this particular episode (since it was without George and Kramer) is that when Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David got together for the show during their long run, there was no mistaking that they were going to write a hilarious show every time. Combining both of them into one, Jerry's and Larry's minds were the comic genius of our time, if not of all time.

Elaine: Somebody please. THE AIR CONDITIONER!
bombersflyup15 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Pen is about Elaine going with Jerry to Florida to visit his parents and attend a dinner in honour of his father.

A golden episode, hilarious throughout. Which is odd considering it's void of George and Kramer, the only such episode. It's true to life and funny because of it. Old people don't put on air conditioners in the heat and get cold when it isn't, they have no awareness of their surroundings and always have the television or radio turned up to a million and can't hear a thing. Jerry's standup could be better, that's about the only negative.

Morty: Jack can afford to give away a pen with all his money. Believe me. He gives me a check for $19.45. He didn't have a Coke. Ho, ho, ho.

1. Jerry gets a pen 2. Elaine sweats 3. Elaine hurts her back

I thought this episode was a classic. I don't see anything on the wikipedia page, but it surely felt like the "Chinese Restaurant" episode for me. It had a similar characteristic where the characters bicker about stupid things (particularly a space pen in this episode) in a foreign environment. The retirement home environment was cliche but hilarious. I'd hate to be in a place like that when I get old. I think Jerry's parents really shined here and I definitely do want to see them more. Elaine was also hilarious as she sweats, hurts her back, and get drugged all for the sake of the episode. She really put herself out for it.

Pen a Space Odyssey
safenoe19 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I first watched The Pen back in the 1990s when I became a fan of Seinfeld, and I was very curious about the astronaut pen, and I wanted to get one as soon as possible! I remember a comedian cracking a line that why would you spend millions on an astronaut pen, you can use a pencil (the audience guffaws big time). But what the comedian failed to recognize is that pencils aren't great for astronauts because if a pencil led breaks, it can (even though it's minute) float and cause damage to the interior so that's why astronaut pens are safer and more effective init.

To this day I still don't have an astronaut pen.

All he said was he liked the pen

Still a solid story without George Costanza and Cosmo Kramer.

March 27th 2023rd 21st century.

What was this episode about?: George and Kramer are left in New York while Jerry and Elaine travel to Florida to scuba dive and see Jerry's folks.

Jerry likes a pen.

Elaine gets high

And we are introduced to the senior citizens of the Seinfeldverse. Good Luck.

Story and the production overview: Fun static episode.

We spend a whole episode mostly in Sharon's and morty's crib in Florida. The old folks there are very special. Got to see someone writing a check for 19.45?

Despite the other 2 being absent, this episode is way better than all episodes in season 9.

Highlight: Senior citizens behaviour

laugh meter: 8

villain: Senior citizens they were batty

What can be learned?: Better off chilling with the gators

Verdict: I like the Pen.

The Pen is an absolute classic, that's really hilarious, as this is the 1st time that George and Kramer were both not in a Seinfeld episode

Warning: Spoilers
*plot*. While Jerry and Elaine visit Jerry's parents in Florida, Jerry suffers a scuba diving accident, while Elaine endures an uncomfortable night on a Sofa Bed. A tribute to Jerry's dad goes awry after Jerry accepts an astronaut pen from Jack Klompus.

The Pen is an absolute classic, that's really hilarious, as this is the 1st time that George and Kramer were both not in a Seinfeld episode. This is a classic episode, although I must say it does feel strange not seeing George or Kramer, and I thought Jerry's opening stand up about bathing suits was very funny, plus the funniest moment in the movie for me is when Elaine takes too many muscle relaxing pills, and says hilarious things!(Stella!). It's very well written by Larry David, and Tom Cherones does another perfect job of directing, plus Sandy Baron is just great as Jack Klompus. The whole fuss over the astronaut Pen cracks me up every time, and Barney Martin and Liz Sheridan are terrific as always as Jerry's parents, plus I would put this one in my top 20!. The Pen is an absolute classic, that's really hilarious, as this is the 1st time that George and Kramer were both not in a Seinfeld Episode, and I say Go see it now if you haven't!. ***** out of 5

Favorite quotes.

Jerry: Oh wow, that's the astronaut pen, I heard about that, where did you get it. Jack: Oh it was a gift.
