"But I need the home-bed advantage"
juanmaffeo17 October 2016
What a perfectly rounded episode. A single strong storyline involving Elaine moving into Jerry's apartment and its subsequent regrets and changes.

It is perfectly clear that in this early episodes Jerry is the protagonist of the show. The other characters interact with him (mainly George and little Kramer) but they don't have proper individual stories. That hurts the episode in some way (we want more Kramer!) but it also lets it focus and strengthen its already great idea.

Right from the opening the story begins and it never stops until its very end. Twist and turns in the middle but so much more also. We get quality social commentary and totally relatable conversations/situations. I love it that in this early seasons there are a lot of parties or dinners, mainly a lot of social situations that kind of seem lost its focus on the later seasons. The everchaging scenario for Jerry is always keeping the story moving and the stakes getting higher.

On a side note we a great scene with George pretending to be married in order to attract women (classic George) and a fantastic dialogue between Jerry and Kramer regarding the K-Man un-human nature.

Overall, I feel a lot of the early episodes got lost in the shuffle and nobody regards them as they should. These are greatly written episodes with funny social situations and even if the tone isn't fully realized the foundations are there.

lord of the idiots

Warning: Spoilers
1. New apartment opens up in Jerry's building 2. Jerry loans Elaine 5000 3. George puts a ring on

Elaine is constantly stressed about her apartment and it seems to be her running theme. This episode is centered around her journey of almost getting an apartment. It helped elucidate more between Jerry and Elaine's relationship. It seems like it was a significant enough of a relationship (perhaps friends turned to lovers) that he still feels uncomfortable by the idea of her living upstairs, He is considerate enough to tell her about the apartment (and also make sure she doesn't get hurt in the process of trying to make her not move in there) but at the same time he's not comfortable enough with her to move in upstairs. A very nuanced relationship so far.

George is just doing George things on the side. Quite a funny spin on the common wedding ring myth.

It Never Works Out

Jerry thinks he has scored an apartment for Elaine, above him, in his building. He then realizes this could be devastating for his privacy. So now he needs to put a stop to it without hurting their friendship. George tries to get girls by wearing a phony wedding ring (having heard that women are attracted to married men). Once again, poor Jerry talks himself into trouble because he is a nice guy.

"You have no idea what an idiot is"
MaxBorg8929 November 2007
"Is that right? I just threw away a lifetime of guilt-free sex and floor seats for every sporting event in Madison Square Garden, so please, a little respect, for I am Costanza, lord of the idiots!". This exchange, spoken at the end of The Apartment, is probably the best ever written for the series, and a glorious closure for an episode that once again shows how cynical, selfish and shallow the show's protagonists are (the famous "no hugs, no learning" principle).

Causing the entire mess is an apartment in Jerry's building, which the comedian inadvertently recommends to Elaine after it is vacated. Alas, it doesn't take him too long to realize having his ex-girlfriend live only a few feet away would be excruciating, and so he tries to discourage her from moving in by all means possible. Meanwhile, Kramer's hair is stuffed with mousse, and George has discovered single women are turned on by wedding rings.

The funniest thing about this show is the transformation that occurs in Jerry: previously, we had seen him uneasy, embarrassed, even sad, but never angry and actually scheming against another person. Of course, since this is a series "about nothing" with no sign of continuity (in fact, references to other episodes are so brief and casual one could start watching Seinfeld from Season 6 onwards and still get what it's all about: nothing), such a shift in personality needs no explanation and is just an excuse for entertaining audiences throughout the 23-minute runtime.

Even funnier is the fact that, despite this being, in theory, Jerry's story, the whole thing is gloriously hijacked by Richards and Alexander, the former making Kramer's traditionally goofy hairstyle much goofier and the latter bringing a fresh wind of innovation with his raging assessment about himself. Maybe that's the most shocking aspect of Seinfeld: prior to this episode, the closest any TV character had come to self-criticism was when Homer Simpson, in May 1990, said: "Maybe I'm not that bright"; a mere eleven months later, the greatest sitcom of all time showed the world that even the small screen was no longer a safe place.

The Apartment is an awesome episode, that's pretty funny, with an amusing story, and a hilarious situation for Jerry's character

The Apartment is an awesome episode, that's pretty funny, with an amusing story, and a hilarious situation for Jerry's character. This time around Jerry gets Elaine an apartment in his building, without realizing at the time, that it would cause big problems, while George tries a sociological experiment, with wearing a ring to attract women. I thought Elaine's reaction when she found Jerry got her the apartment was really funny, and the ending is very funny as well, plus Kramer looks odd with mousse in his hair. It's very well made and written by Peter Mehlman and Tom Cherones did an excellent job of directing, plus Glenn Shadix is great as Harold, as he plays another great kooky role. Kramer has a hilarious scene in this one where he suggests Jerry loans Elaine 5000$, and Jerry's opening stand up was very good as well, plus it's amusing when Jerry gets angry. The Apartment is an awesome episode, that's pretty funny, with an amusing story, and a hilarious situation for Jerry's character, and I say it's a must see for all Seinfeld fans!. **** out of 5 Favorite quotes.

(Diner scene where Jerry meets up with George) Jerry: So is there anyway out of this Elaine thing?. George: Tough. Jerry: You know the water pressure's terrible in my building, and she loves a good shower. George: I never heard of anyone who turned down an apartment, because of a weak shower spray. Jerry: If they were fanatic about showers they might. George: For that rent She'd take a bath in the toilet tank if she had to.

Jerry: You have no idea what an idiot is, Elaine just gave me a chance to get out, and I didn't take it, this is an idiot. George: Is that right?, I just threw away a lifetime of guilt free sex, and floor seats for every sporting event in Madison Square Garden, so please a little respect for I am Costanza lord of the idiots.

But suddenly, a new contender has emerged..
bombersflyup25 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Apartment is about Jerry getting Elaine the apartment above him, only to realize it wasn't such a good idea.

The episode has a great segment, where Jerry tells George he's going to have to put on act in front of Elaine and then she comes in elated. Jerry tells her the bad news, but then Kramer ruins it for him again and he explains it to Kramer. It has dropped down a few pegs though, as the dialogue has a lot of repetitive lines in it by characters back and forth, along with Harold and Manny in it a fair bit. Also ridiculous that three women are interested in George here at this one party, because he pretends to have a wife. The less believable it is, the less funny. Jerry's standup's both good and bad here.

Cheers
safenoe24 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Patricia Ayame Thomson guest stars as Susie in The Apartment, from season two. I didn't know that there was a two month hiatus between this episode and the previous one, and that its future was hanging by a thread. But thankfully the success of Cheers managed to keep Seinfeld alive and popular, and it's quite ironic considering Cheers itself wasn't a huge hit when it started. There's a kind of a pay it forward here because Seinfeld helped launch other sitcoms on the Must See TV that NBC reigned supreme for on Thursday nights, although Union Square, which got the prize prime time slot between "Friends" and "Seinfeld lasted only one season.
