He's No Prize/There's No Prize

There are two plot elements here. The first is Rhoda's new boyfriend. She is on cloud nine and wants Mary to meet the guy. They wake her up at 2:00 a.m. and but when he sees Mary he begins to forget about Rhoda. Soon, she is included in their dates and eventually, Rhoda is left out. Rhoda sees Mary as a traitor. The second, more entertaining plot line involves Mary being forced to pick people from the station as candidate for a Teddy award, a local new editing award. Ted Baxter is nominated for three awards. But Lou talks Mary into putting her show up for an award. The evening when the awards are passed out is the best part of the episode. It affirms how often WJM fall short.

The first Teddy awards

Well done episode that explores Rhoda's bad points: Rhoda is so wrapped up with her new boyfriend Bob she ignores the good news that a show Mary produced has been nominated for a Teddy award. Then Rhoda brings Bob to meet Mary at her apartment: at 2.00 am. When Bob becomes more interested in Mary, Rhoda takes out her resentment on Mary, embarrassing her at the Teddy award ceremony.

Not heavy on comedy but the story is nicely done and well acted.

Rhoda is kinda petty in this one...

The title refers to the two plots in this episode. First, everyone at WJM is excited by the upcoming Teddy Awards ceremony, as practically everyone, including Mary, has been nominated. Second, Rhoda has a new boyfriend and she's excited because she thinks he might be a keeper. But soon Bob begins asking Rhoda to bring Mary along...and it sure becomes awkward! This, naturally, creates some tensions between Mary and Rhoda.

To me, this was kind of a weak episode. Although I enjoyed the Teddy Awards portion quite a bit, the tension between Rhoda and Mary is a bit ugly. Still, it IS "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and any episode from this great series is still worth watching.
