The Beautiful Ruta Lee Opens Season Two With A Bang
ccthemovieman-15 August 2010
Ruta Lee was a stunning "looker" in her day. In fact, she looked hot for many, many years. She's almost 75 years old now, but I'll be she still looks pretty darned good. More importantly, at least regarding her craft, she's been a very good actress.

In here, she's the femme-fatale "Ora Kane," who, in a shocking opening scene, shoots two people. Her story seems to satisfy police. In a nutshell, she claims a guy came in to rob her place of employment - a check-cashing place - and shot her co-worker and she then grabbed a nearby gun and shot the thief.

The more "Det. Frank Ballinger" (series star Lee Marvin) thinks about it, though, things don't add up. There had been five successful robberies of this kind in recent weeks and the man always worked alone....but "Ora" claims there were two people, and one escaped. She gives a detailed description of the guy. Soon, the lab reports both guys were shot from below the horizontal level. Now, the spotlight starts to go on Ora. It's interesting to see how Frank slowly uncovers the truth in this case, which includes some investigating of the supposedly-innocent co-worker, too.

This was the opening episode of the second season. There was a different opening, a little more dramatic than the first year, and Marvin has cut his hair into a military-style buzz cut, as it was sometimes called.

Homage to Police Squad
shazam195025 November 2009
This episode was reworked on the Zucker brothers' parody of the short lived TV show POLICE SQUAD. I saw this episode after the POLICE SQUAD episode so it was wonderful to watch the same story played straight for a change. Ruta Lee is a favorite actress of mine and to see her as a cold blooded killer and manipulative female was exciting and funny at the same time. The original story had Lee Marvin as cool as always get a hunch and collaborate with his lab techs to solve the crime and stop Ruta Lee BEFORE SHE KILLS HIM. Of course I enjoy every minute of M SQUAD. AS always the soundtrack by Benny Carter, Count Basie, and supervised by Stanley Wilson has good atmospheric tension for a grittier show.

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** The tough and battered looking Let. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, turns on the charm to get to the bottom of a double murder at a local Chicago check cashing office. It turned out that despite to pay off her bookie Ora Kane, Ruta Lee, after her boyfriend and partner in crime, embezzlement, Jim Landry, Paul Maxwell, refused to go along with her plan to rip the place off for another $1,500.00 she not only blasted him but a customer Ralph Halpen, John Mitchum, who just happened to be there cashing a check.

Claiming she killed Halpen in self-defense after he shot Landry seemed to be a good enough story for the Chicago PD to believe her at first. But Let. Baallinger saw through Ora's story and with the evidence mounting against her set a trap for her. Winning over Ora's confidence and making like he's got the hots for her Let. Ballinger invited her out for a quiet and romantic dinner only to have him lower the boom on Ora with the evidence he dug up against her.

***SPOILERS*** Wild and hysterical final with Ora after she was exposed pulling a gun out of her purse and blasting the surprised Let. Ballinger and then making like he was murdered by an unknown gunman. As it turned out Let. Ballinger made previsions for that too that not only in the end saved his life but got a by now as mad as a wildcat in heat Ora to loose her cool and without knowing it confess to the double murder that she committed!
