Freda Rosen, who plays Rita, was the wife of Arnie Rosen, who was a writer on Jackie Gleason's first series, Cavalcade of Stars (1949). No one on the show knew this when she auditioned for the part.
This episode was a favorite of Audrey Meadows.
While serving the coffee, the actor playing Bert Weidermeyer inadvertently bumps the coffee table. Nothing spills, but Art Carney (Norton) quickly ad-libs "Leave it there, the cat'll get it!" Jackie Gleason (Ralph) of course responds with an ad-lib of his own. Their genius for covering mistakes is evident.
When Rita Wedemeyer suggests Alice have a pet name for Ralph, she says all Alice needs to do is pick out Ralph's outstanding feature, and find a name that fits, Alice agrees and says to Ralph "Isn't that a good idea, Tubby?"
Tubby was the role Jackie Gleason played in his motion picture debut, Navy Blues (1941)
