HOMICIDE –Hit, Run and Stop Dead - 1968

This is episode 165 of the top-notch Australian Police series, HOMICIDE. This series ran 510 episodes between 1964 and 1977. It follows the Homicide squad of the Melbourne Police Force.

The episode starts with the home invasion robbery by two armed men of a diamond wholesaler. The men, Kevin Leslie and Max MacAlister, tie up the merchant's wife and nanny and rough the man up. The man, Kenric Hudson, coughs up the keys to his safe. Leslie and MacAlister loot the safe, tie up Hudson, then, calmly walk out of the house. They head for the street just as a car from Hudson's security firm arrives. They had been alerted by a silent alarm. The security types give chase when MacAlister and Leslie hotfoot into the nearby woods.

Leslie pulls his revolver and shoots the one security man as the second one tackles MacAlister. Leslie then continues his flight out to a nearby street. There, a waiting getaway car, driven by Max Cullen is waiting. Leslie jumps in and tells Cullen to floor it.

The Police are called and Detectives Leonard Teale, George Mallaby and Lionel Long are soon on the scene. They send off the captured MacAlister to cool his heels in a cell while they go over the scene. They are unable to get a description of the shooter because he was wearing a mask. MacAlister refuses to rat out his partner in crime even though he is looking at big prison time.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, er, the hideout, Cullen and Leslie are waiting for the boss, Peter Aanensen to show up. Leslie decides that since the Police will be doubly alert, he should get a bigger slice of the split. Needless to say this leads to a falling out among the thieves and their employer.

At the same time, the Detectives have decided that the robbers must have had some inside help. They quickly focus their attention on the Welsh nanny, Lynn James. James folds under some face to face 3rd degree and admits she helped. It seems she was homesick for Wales and needed some cash to get home. She knew Aanensen and had mentioned it to him. Aanensen had made the plan and hired the men for the job. Miss James gives them the address of a small cabin where she was to meet the crooks for her cut.

The Police raid the cabin, but all they find is a stiff. The dead man, Leslie, had been a bit too forceful with his cash demands. This led to him collecting some unneeded lead in his back. The trail leads back to Aanensen and soon the whole crew are rounded up for an extended holiday on the State.

This one is a pretty good episode, with plenty of violence, backstabbing, and red herrings throughout.
