I liked this episode........

This was a very good episode; Im surprised to read the neg comments about it. Every cop show in history at some point did the old stand by, "Im the boss and that reporter is going to follow you for a day, we need the positive publicity!". Why others feel it is far fetched is beyond me. I especially like Henry Darrow's role. It was actually a pretty unique take on the father of the kidnapped kids angle. Even the drinking did not seem a goof to me. Maybe he just needed the right lady to invite him for a glass of the bubbly.

Loudmouth feminist Reporter makes for a super-annoying guest star.

Warning: Spoilers
The crime being committed makes for a great story (a kidnapping fronting for an even larger extortion plan). The actors in that plot include the great Henry Darrow, plus Hawaii Five-0 "regular" guest stars Moe Keale (27 episodes), and the beautiful Josie Over (15 episodes).

If they were the only players in the story, it would be great. But the assignment of a "big-name news reporter", who dogs and pesters McGarrett, makes this painful to watch.

Actress Jean Simmons, as news lady "Terri O'Brien" is incredibly irritating (not just to McGarrett, but to anyone watching this show). Please Lady, just shut the heck up already!

Sure, it's a TV Show, but some of the scenes are not realistic. A news reporter would not be present during the interrogation of a suspected criminal. And when gunshots are fired, the police would not allow that same reporter to get front and center in the line of fire.

But the most improbable scene is the closing, where McGarrett and the reporter are toasting each other with a bottle of champagne. McGarrett spends the whole show trying to dump this blowhard, and they end up all lovey-dovey? Nope.

Still a good show, worth watching to see how the kidnapper/extortionists will work out their seemingly well-executed plan. For that, I rate 8 Stars for "The Cop on the Cover".

Florida Fred.

A silly stereotype...not a real lady.
planktonrules6 September 2012
This is a very weak episode--mostly due to the writer's difficulty writing a three dimensional character. Jean Simmons (not the one from KISS--the actress) stars as a reporter that it just too ridiculous to be believable. In addition, there's an odd mistake that the producers or Jack Lord SHOULD have caught. Together, they make this a very weak episode.

The show begins with a kidnapping. At around the same time a couple of teens are kidnapped, McGarrett and the Governor are having a very rare disagreement. The Governor wants McGarrett to cooperate with a magazine article about him and Five-O--McGarrett wants to tell the reporter to get lost. However, the Governor pulls rank and insists McGarrett and his men cooperate...period.

When McGarrett meets the lady reporter (Simmons), he is brusque and rude. He makes it very clear that he didn't want her to interview him or his men but that he's doing it because he's been ordered to cooperate. It's really hard to like Steve here. However, through the rest of the episode, Simmons acts like an idiot--proving, at least to the writer, that dame reporters are annoying! Far from politically correct, this show missing the mark because is portrays the lady so poorly--like a third-rate Lois Lane who blunders into situations where she has no right being involved. As a result, the show just comes off as sexist and dumb. What do you think?

By the way, there was an inconsistency in this particular episode. In previous ones, Steve didn't drink alcohol--and even said a few episodes before this that he NEVER drinks. However, at the end of "The Cop on the Cover", the show ends with him sharing champagne with Simmons. Don't you think the writer and especially Jack Lord should have caught this mistake?

Steve McGarrett and Jack Lord were both treated badly with this painful episode
belanger7525 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When Steve surprisingly actually protests to the Governor not to have to let a reporter come and be part of 5-0 business the former is 100 percent correct. They are running a tight, rather classified operation they do not have time nor can they afford to let a civilian outsider in on so much. It goes down hill from there. The reporter is totally a nightmare. Jean Simmons proved she is not a great enough actress to pull this off. Her character is blamesome and unlikable. The results of the trouble the reporter directly caused proved Steve had better judgement than the Governor the latter whom ought to very seriously consider going on vacation or actually resigning. What did Jack Lord do to deserve get this painful script that must have been also a total nightmare to make? What!?! Skip it completely like the plague!
