There is friction in Dodge when a lady wants to compete with Kitty
kfo94947 January 2013
A sharp-tongue staccato talking woman named Stella Damon comes to Dodge with the idea of buying the Long Branch and settling down. When she talks to Kitty about buying her place, she does more of making Kitty mad than getting on her good side. Soon Stella has brought a place across the street with the idea of opening a saloon and gambling place to compete with the Long Branch.

When Stella gets Festus to get her help in building the new place all things look bleak for the Long Branch. When the whiskey salesman, Eddie, comes to town he finds that Kitty is not selling but the new place across the street wants a large order. When Eddie finds out that Stella is the new owner he remembers that she use to sell to her in Pueblo but her place caught fire and burned to the ground with her husband inside. He thought it was strange that she would be able to open up a fancy looking place in Dodge.

It will not be long before Stella resorts to quiet Eddie for all that he knows. And in the end, she will not do as well as she did in Pueblo about hiding.

The best thing about this episode is the friction between the two ladies. It could have been an all out cat-fight but the writer let Kitty take the high road and just reduced it to insults. It was a story that held interest to the end. Perhaps not the most entertaining story but was one that your enjoy watching.

Delightful Banter: Simmering Disdain
mrsjbtoomer22 October 2019
Not much in this episode by way of shootouts, horse chases, or outlaws but wow! What a cat fight. Miss Kitty and Stella contentiously engage with such aplomb as to leave the modern (2019) reality TV female rumpus in the kiddie pool. The insults and verbal jibes are quick and sharp, delivered with sparkling smiles. Delightful banter barely conceals the simmering disdain suffered by our dueling saloon proprietors. One could think more than customer patronage is up for grabs in this business woman's battle that was so far ahead of its time.

Taken at face value this is a fun and refreshing Gunsmoke that clearly detours off the formulaic path so familiar to Gunsmoke enthusiasts. I enjoyed it.

Jacqueline Scott's fabulous number, "Big Hearted Stella" delivered in big voice while trotting the Palace runway is not to be missed. Delightful and poignant at once. Bravo!

Kitty Wins

Warning: Spoilers
This was a great episode. It was refreshing to see another business woman in Dodge that wasn't a seamstress, teacher or store clerk. It was nice to see an actual villianess instead of a villian. There wasn't a lot of bad women in Gunsmoke and this one was a doozy. Killing for a second time and the same way she killed her first husband and still collected the insurance money. Fire back then was devastating and covered up crimes easily unless the Marshall is a smart man and figured it all out like Matt Dillion. I love watching all the old episodes of Gunsmoke, simpler times and something the whole family can watch unlike most shows today. We need more shows like this now a days.

Touche! Kitty....

I thoroughly enjoyed this uncustomary addition to the usual Gunsmoke fare. The character of Stella is well played, and Kitty is her same, delightful self. Don't miss a chance to watch this one; you won't regret it!

Baffling story

Could have been fun if made as a two hour show with Stella's history explained. Stella's anger didn't just appear out of the blue. And so the ending made no sense. Did I miss something?

Not great, not even good

Other reviewers seemed to like this episode. It was very slow and drawn out with hardly any action except for a saloon burning down. It was so dull to me that I can't even remember enough of what happened to write a decent review. Anyway, I have seen it twice now and there won' be a third.
