THE DETECTIVES – Escort - 1961

This one is episode 77 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

This one starts with Detective squad members, Adam West and the new man, Telly Savalas, being called in to see Detective Captain, Robert Taylor. The two have been assigned to escort a pair of prisoners to the State Prison. They are to take the train to the Prison. West's prisoner is Charles Tannen, while Savalas is to take pretty Pat Crowley to the big house.

Savalas happens to know Crowley. He had escorted to and from court on her bank robbery charges. During the trip, Crowley, tells Savalas how she had fallen for the wrong guy and gotten mixed up with the wrong bunch. "I wish I had met a man like you." She tells Savalas. Savalas is rather smitten with the woman.

Further up the line, the train is derailed and there is a wreck and a big fire. Savalas carries Crowley off the train and into the nearby woods. He then hurries back to the train to see if he can help. Savalas meets fellow Detective West, coming off the train with his own prisoner. West stops him from entering the now blazing car. "Your prisoner is dead! I saw her hand from under some blazing wreckage. You can't go in there!"

Needless to say, West has mistaken someone else for Crowley. Savalas returns to Crowley and tells her he has a plan. She can stay at an apartment he has in town. They can get her false identity papers etc. Later on, he can quit the force, move somewhere else, and the can be husband and wife.

Several months go by and Savalas is happy as a clam with his new woman. What he does not know, is that Crowley is stepping out with crook, Ed Nelson, behind his back. And of course there is another fly in the ointment. A citizen, Russell Collins, has seen Crowley out buying some groceries. He recognizes her from when her photo was in the papers. This is reported to the Police and the wheels start rolling. The apartment is watched. The Police get a shock when they find it was rented by their own Detective, Savalas.

Needless to say where this is leading as Taylor and his crew pay a visit to the love nest. Cuffs are produced and everyone is hauled off for a stay at the crowbar inn.

As silly as it might sound, it works rather well. Actor, turned director, Richard Carlson keeps the story moving right along. Carlson is perhaps best remembered from his roles in the films, THE SOUND OF FURY, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. His television roles include the leads in MACKENZIE'S RAIDERS and I LED THREE LIVES.
