Abusive Power
JordanThomasHall8 March 2019
Residing on a visitor's visa that has now expired, Mrs. Livingston has been turned down for a permanent visa. Tom feels she qualifies for her intelligence and having "exceptional abilities that are in demand by an American employer." Tom talks his secretary Tina out of a well-meaning but misguided public demonstration. He visits the Department of Employment to reason against her deportation with Miss Harriet Ritter (Meg Wyllie)- in charge of the case. Stern, haughty Miss Ritter feels that Mrs. Livingston is capable of leaving to compete against the domestic labor pool and prioritizes their worker's rights. Beyond that flimsy excuse the real reason appears to surface when she seems to insinuate Tom and Mrs. Livingston's "unusual relationship". Tom obviously doesn't feel the woman is doing her job, instead operating under a personal grudge. He appeals the decision. Despite the one attempt, Eddie feels his dad broke a promise when he couldn't get Mrs. Livingston approved. Mrs. Livingston sagely surmises, "He is learning his father can not do everything." Tom: "I wish he didn't have to learn it so soon." Tom gives his young son a brief lesson on power and how that power can be abused. He struggles to tell Mrs. Livingston the real reason of the denial in what the woman thinks of their relationship. Tom sees that Eddie is the best to explain the situation to Miss Ritter.

Morals: Power can be unjustly abused. (2) A child's tell-it-like-it-is innocence is sometimes best to reveal the truth in a situation.
