Arrivederci Roma
Prismark1027 February 2021
Chelmsford 123 was so inspired by the success of Blackadder.

It was as if Jimmy Mulville and Rory McGrath got together and said. If one bunch of alternative comedians can make a success of the Elizabethan or Georgian period.

Then another bunch of alternative comedians can jump on the bandwagon.

They go further back in time to Roman Britain.

Mulville plays Aulus Paulinus the new governor sent by the Roman emperor. Aulus did not want the gig but here he is in Chelmsford with his dozy, conniving brother in law Grasientus.

McGrath plays Badvoc, the local tribe leader in Chelmsford. He likes to rob, pillage and kill Romans.

In the first episode Badvoc is part of the welcoming party to the new governor. A Roman now settled in Britain thinks that Badvoc plans to kill the governor.

This was a lukewarm episode and it is never as funny as the writers thought it was. It is hard to be too critical of the opening episode. After all the first series of Blackadder was not that great.

The most inspired gag was as Aulus and Grasientus try to find their way to Chelmsford. The Tardis appears in the background.
