The Book
Hitchcoc19 August 2019
Diane borrows 500 dollars from Sam to get a rare autographed first edition of Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." A series of events make him think she will not pay him back. In the process, he stupidly destroys the book. I wonder if Diane had been a bit more specific about the sales value of the book, it may have survived. Expensive mistake.

I'll Gladly Pay You Tuesday (#4.6)

Warning: Spoilers
Diane borrows 500 from Sam because she wants to buy a Hemingway book that is also signed. He doesn't pressure her into paying back right away but gets upset when he sees her getting expensive clothes, eating expensive food and buying girl scout cookies. She gives him the book as a deposit but he accidentally ruins it and pretends that he likes this book so much so he now owes her 700.

A fun episode, but I must say that it hurt my heart to see Sam ripping the pages out of the book! It being bloated because of water wasn't such a big deal in my opinion. I wonder if this episode will have an effect on the future episodes and their relationship.

A Fool And His Money...
dgplatt-6012117 April 2024
Rarely does an episode's theme get summed up by a single line of dialogue, but Diane does it here, as only Diane can: "Despite your assurances, you do not lend money with the sang-froid you claim."

It's been said that one should never lend large sums of money to friends - let alone employees/former girlfriends. Sam has evidently learned this, and decided to remedy it by lending with no expectations of getting it back. That's an interesting strategy, but Sam didn't count on Diane Chambers.

Diane needs the money to buy a rare Hemingway edition, and asks Sam for $500. Of course, it almost immediately goes wrong, as Sam begins to Blanche at Diane's other purchases. As with many episodes, it becomes a battle of wills between Sam and Diane, with Sam losing out.

This isn't anything special, but it's always fun to see Sam lose his cool. One nice touch is the choice of Hemingway. While Diane's "sensibilities" may not be "attuned to Hemingway," it makes sense that Sam might find Papa more his speed. Just don't read it in the bath!

"No wonder it's so expensive, it's inflatable!"

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode we have one storyline: Diane borrows 500 dollars from Sam to get a rare autographed first edition of a Hemingway, to sell it later with a greater value since she considers 500 laughable for such a rarity. I liked this episode, it was fun, a couple of major issues however: Diana was really getting on my nerves throghout the whole episode because of the way she was flashing things she had bought, a cashmire sweater, new shoes, expensive lobster, giving large tips to the scout girl, while Sam was there waiting for the money, and the way she then gives him the book didn't make a lot of sense in my opinion, first of all, if she bought such expensive things two weeks after buying the book, then she wouldn't have needed to ask for the money, or at least that amount of money from Sam, then it's stupid of her to instead of paying him back right away while she made the sacrifice of waiting for a buyer, buying things for her and then giving him the responsability of guarding the book, when it was her that needed to do that, and last but not least what sense does it make by Sam's point of view to outbid his own proprity? Yes, I know he didn't want Diane to find out, but since the money was his to begin with, he could've simply said "I love the book, and I'm not selling it" simply as that, you can argue that Diane bought it, but she hadn't given the money to him, so if he wanted, he could've just refused it. Aside from that "plot hole" it was a fine episode, with many humurous gags, specially when Diane says it's weird lending money from Sam after their physique relationship witch prompts a very appropriate "It kind of feels like you should be given me the money doesn't it?", great chemistry between these two. MVP : Sam Malone. 6/10 Peter Shelby
