A Visit from Dr. Snoozefest

Warning: Spoilers
The very solid Season 1 hits its low point with this episode and the next. I originally rated it a 6 but bumped it up to a 7 just based off the fact that it was inspired by another great 80's movie - Dreamscape. That is two good movies in a row, if you are counting.

Some viewers have already compared it to Nightmare on Elm Street, and sure there are some obvious similarities here, most notably the idea of not falling asleep for fear of dying in your dreams. However, no, this was clearly inspired by Dreamscape, even having the laboratory room directly from that movie, and the tone and atmosphere are also near exact copies.

That is actually a good thing. But whereas that movie had a psychic psycho hired to assassinate the President and Elm Street had an over-the-top and nearly charismatic bad guy in Freddie Krueger, this show has just a quiet stalker who wants to kill women simply because they sort of soft rejected him. Pathetic. Of course, it is a tremendous coincidence that he targets Prue, who he has no idea is a witch with powers.

The moment she realizes she can use her powers in her dreams, of course, the laconic stalker gets the same fate that he had been giving his victims, though I would think that simply waking up before hitting the bottom would have saved all these lives.

The side-plot in this one is the comical consequences of a love spell cast by Piper and Phoebe. Seeing the ladies get too much of what they asked for has its fun moments, but I'm kinda bothered by the idea of how different this would be if male witches did the same thing. The personal gain is straight outta control in this season.

Stay Awake

Phoebe and Piper decide to make a lust spell to attract and date their princes charming, while Prue is working too much. When the crippled Whitaker Berman is rejected by Prue, he uses an experiment to project himself in her dream and kill her. Meanwhile, Inspector Andy Trudeau is investigating the mysterious death of the waitress Skye Russell and he finds the connection with two other closed cases, and he suspects that Whitaker is dream leaping. Piper and Phoebe help Prue to face Whitaker, while the sisters get in trouble with their spell.

"Dream Sorcerer" is a great episode of "Charmed". Alternating funny moments, with the unexpected reaction of the men to the spell of Phoebe and Piper, with tense scenes with this serial killer that recalls Freddy Krueger, and also the investigation of Andy, I liked a lot this show. My vote is nine.

Whatever you do don't fall asleep

Dream sorcerer is a masterpiece and deserves high praise. The atmosphere is wonderful. The girls all look their best and display genuine emotion called for the script. Matt Schulz gives a terrific terrifyingly and seductive performance. The lines are funny, unpredictable and unique. His portrayal earned number ten on my list of favorite villains. I even like the synthetic music adding to the scenes instead of distracting from it. It flows nicely, never once feeling forced or unoriginal.

This was a marking point from when the show really went there and earned its cult status. Charmed is on top of the world and nothing can steal its thunder.

The One With The Dream Killer...

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy this episode. It's a bit creepy though. It reminds me of A Nightmare On Elm Street. You know, people dying in their dreams and then dying in real life.

In this episode, girls are dying in ways that aren't possible. Like all of their bones breaking, not a scratch on the outside, and all of their doors and windows locked, so no one could get it. How does that happen? I'll tell you. There's a guy out there doing so creepy Freddy Krueger stuff. I'm talking about people getting killed in their dreams. This man asks continuous amounts of girls out, and when they reject him, he uses a machine, to go into their dreams, and kill them. One night at Quake, he asks Prue out, and when she says she's seeing someone, he doesn't like that answer. So he tries to kill her in her sleep. He tries several times, and once she figures out what he's doing, she tries to stay awake. Eventually, she's driving, falls asleep, gets into a car crash, and is almost killed by the Dream Sorcerer. But, then she flings him off a roof in her dream, and he dies. Suck it. It is one of the only episodes where the evil person is a mortal. Usually they're demons or warlocks.

Overall, I give this episode 7 out of 10.
