CORONADO 9 – The Anxious Mariner - 1961

Coronado 9 was a one season Private Eye series that ran during, 1960-61. Rod Cameron plays a former Navy Intelligence officer who decides to set up shop as a private investigator. He works out of his beach front house in San Diego. This is episode 34 of the series.

Cameron is hired by the U.S. Government to help bring back an exiled mobster from the East Bloc. The man, Steve Darrell, has some papers hid in the U.S. that could help destroy the mob. Darrell has made a deal to get back into the USA in exchange for the papers.

Cameron goes undercover as First Officer on a tramp steamer dropping cargo in Danzig, Poland. They then smuggle Darrell and his daughter, Coleen Gray, on board for the trip to the west.

The deal looks like it will be a smooth assignment for Cameron. But alas, the flies in the ointment soon appear. The Captain of the ship, Robert Foulk, has struck a deal with the mob. He has smuggled on board William Schallert, a hit-man for the mob.

There is soon a beating or two handed out with gun-play needed to settle the argument in favor of Cameron.

Quick and to the point television fare, with just the right amount of violence required. While not a barn-burner of a series, it does supply enough action to fill the 25 minute runtime.

Coleen Gray is of course well known to fans of Film-Noir. She had roles in KISS OF DEATH, HELLS FIVE HOURS, NIGHTMARE ALLEY, THE SLEEPING CITY, KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL and THE KILLING.
