The slow path to humanity
mcguin7129 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The detective and science work begins as Booth (David Boreanaz) delivers a fridge to the team complete with a well decomposed body. Meanwhile Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is surprised by the arrival in the lab of her old professor, who is also her old flame.

The relationship is quickly rekindled, however Brennan unwittingly discloses key details of the investigation to to her beau only to find he is the expert for the defence in the same case.

The story itself is a little bit of a slow burner and fails to really hit home until the court scenes where Brennan as predicted comes over very much as a knowledgeable but very cold and analytical technogeek, whereas the defence expert wins over the jury with his smile.

It is only with Booths intervention with the lawyers who are pursuaded to question Brennan's motivations to find out the truth that finally win the day, an act that initially appears to cross an unwritten line but helps with the opening up of her public emotions.

As noted this is a bit of a slow burning episode that really only gets hot in the last 10 minutes when Brennan is forced to open up on public. It may not rank highly in the list of top Bones episodes but it is an important moment.

Unfortunately because the main action is less than engrossing its difficult to award top marks despite there being nothing majorly wrong (other than the obviously slimy (ex)lover). Still it does work well overall and the ending moves the characters and their relationships forwards a step.

So not great, but we'll worth an 8¡

Misreading
ctomvelu-129 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Booth delivers an old fridge to the team, and inside is the body of a young woman. At the same time, an old professor of Brennan's shows up in D.C., and he and she quickly rekindle an old sexual relationship. Whqt Brennan doesn't know is that the prof is in D.C. to testify for the defense in the case involving the body in the fridge. He has been instructed to rip her findings to shreds. A tricky episode for Brennan, less so for Angela, who warns Brennan about men in general. Not the most memorable episode, but a good study of Brennan, who is forced to take a step forward in her slow evolution to a full human being. A suggestion of kinkiness involving the dead woman livens things up a bit.

A Couple Steps Back
Hitchcoc8 January 2023
After a stellar episode, we have this one. It's entertaining but has one thing that bugs me. First of all, Tempe's teacher and rival comes to see her. They have casual sex. Booth has brought in a refrigerator with a woman's body in it. It has been decomposing for nearly a year. It leads back to some S&M people who are responsible, but are leaning on their sleazy lawyer to get them off. For me, the portrayal of Brennan fall short. Granted, she uses medical terms that only a trained physician could understand. She shows her brilliance. But having lived on this earth as long as she has and having vocabulary of a genius, how can she not be bright enough to ramp things down a bit, especially after she has been warned that she is losing the jury. They can't make up their minds if she is indeed a robot or has some real humanity.

Great
Lythas_855 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Story overall was bland nothing too memorable like the Epps one the previous episode.. but there are some points to consider:
  • Like some other reviewer said.. this one sets up more character development from Bones.. we found out some episodes earlier that she was a foster child but nothing had been revealed to what exactly happened to her parents.. Now we discover they disappeared.. Great stuff
  • Second point is that back then there wasn't too much of the "girl power we can do it all" feminism or portrayal of men as incompetent buffoons like we see in recent shows but there was a very sexist moment of Angela and her "I know men" and pretty much saying that all are egotistical or some thing close to that... now imagine if a man were to say that about maybe of women getting rejected, for example. Like going with an argument such as women usually do the dumping so when they get dumped they just flip and may very well bash a man to death.. wonder if people would take that without going berserk..

Anyway great episode overall.

Old flames
mitchrmp10 July 2016
Brennan's old college professor/lover shows up in town and they began a professional - and personal - relationship. Things are going well until Booth tells her why he's really there.

This is an interesting episode that shows how well Booth and Brennan work together and how well Booth already knows her. Brennan doesn't have many social or interpersonal skills, as is made very clear in this episode. Booth both verifies this with her and sticks up for her when others give her a hard time. Booth also know exactly how to get her to say what the jury needs to hear. Brennan, is of course, livid with her.

I love the closing scene. Booth knows how to get back on her good side and does it quite well. When they are finally alone and she's in her element, they make up. It's a wonderful scene!

First time as an expert witness?
irishviking2126 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
*I have only seen this show through this episode*

This episode was interesting, until the writers tried to dive further into the odd personality (and apparently the inability to read social cues) of Dr. Brennan. This is the first time we have seen her testify as an expert witness, but are we really to believe that she's never done this before? As highly regarded as she is her field (spoken of many many times), why is she unable to convey facts of a case in terms that a layperson would comprehend? She is counseled on how to do so, and ignores everything related to the way others will interpret her (wears blue, makes eye contact, still speaks in almost entirely technical terms, thus ignoring the only portion she fails to find reason for implementing). This portrays the character as someone with Asperger's Syndrome. She's fact/rule-oriented, feels that's all that should be required, and doesn't seem to understand the need to integrate a sociological aspect into her testimony. I guarantee this odd expression will never be addressed, and that she's just the typical "troubled woman w/ early childhood issues". It's clear with how much sexual undertone there is that she and Booth with eventually be together (get girl, lose girl, get girl back). For those who have seen the full series, feel free to ruin it for me and prove me wrong and email me (figure this out and just take out the periods) Q.U.I.C.K.F.L.O.2.1.@.A.I.M.C.O.M

The One With The Girl In The Fridge...
taylorkingston2 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode. It's pretty good. There's not too much to say about it. It's just a good episode, and is definitively worth watching.

In this episode, the corpse of a woman is found inside a fridge. Bones' old professor, and no-strings-attached bedroom-friend, comes to visit, and she's of course, delighted. The idea that they might hook up again makes Booth mad, for some reason (I know the reason ). Bones, and the team must participate in a trial, to put the killer behind bars.

Best part of this episode: Nothing in particular.

Worst part of this episode: Nothing in particular.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.
