Sanctuary

Jo Van Fleet plays a feisty old woman who runs her small property as a preservation sanctuary for the forest creatures. She's in a big conflict with her neighbor John Crawford who is trying to get her declared incompetent so he can grab her land. She has a champion in Lorne Greene but it's Judge Donald Moffatt she has to make sure he sees her not as a crazy old bat.

This episode is dominated by Van Fleet in her performance. She made a career of playing women much older than herself and this is a role to equal what she did in East Of Eden and Wild River. She's nothing short of wonderful and touching in this Bonanza story.

Warning: Spoilers
Amy wants to take care of all wild critters, injured animals, and strays. People think she's gone over the edge.

Amy "talks" to her dead husband (his portrait), likes to hang out with younger people that others don't think are acceptable. Amy tears down a fence so deer don't get hurt and almost shoots a man, heals Harriet and Poe, makes her own dog food, and feeds animals during the winter.

Having to go to court to prove she's not crazy almost breaks her. Ben brings the judge to show him why Amy does what she does and why she seems to waste her money. Even her niece comes around to believing in her.
