Jarrod and a woman have a secret but the husband does not understand
kfo94943 December 2012
The episode opens with Jarrod escorting a beautiful woman toward the waiting stagecoach. From all indications Jarrod and the woman have something in common in fact you could say they have a big secret between them. As the woman rides off on the stage, a man in the background is writing notes in a book as if spying on the couple.

The next scene shows Adam Howard helping his son, David, practice shoot a rifle. Then appears the woman that Jarrod was with in Stockton. Her name is Marcy the wife of Adam Howard. After Adam opens a letter the next thing he says is that the entire family is going to Stockton- he has business there.

Adam has learned of his wife seeing Jarrod and now is determined to get back at the entire Barkley family. His business in Stockton is to buy the spread next to the Barkley's ranch and dam up the creek. And in the middle of a drought the entire Barkley cattle herd is in jeopardy of being killed.

Jarrod goes to talk with Adam but things go sour. Adam confronts Jarrod with times and places that Jarrod and Marcy have been seen together. And all we get from Jarrod is that Adam is wrong about what he believes.

All viewers know there is a secret between Jarrod and Marcy that the two do not want made public. With both refusing to answer questions the viewer can only expect the worse. And when the herd starts dying it seems violence is the only option.

Simon Oakland is the guest star as he plays the mad husband Adam Howard. Mr Oakland was usual cast a the rough or mob type character in many episodes of the 60's and 70's. In this show he was perfectly cast as the husband believing his wife is unfaithful and demands revenge. A nice offering from the last season of the series.

A regular Othello
bkoganbing7 October 2016
Frontier tycoon Simon Oakland decides to take the family, in fact it's his second family wife Nancy Malone and son Kelly Corcoran on a trip to Stockton. He's got business with the Barkleys, but it's hostile business as he buys up a spread next to them and dams up a creek that feeds the Barkley herds. Oakland won't say why publicly.

Even back in the frontier days there was such a thing as attorney/client privilege and Richard Long has been retained by Nancy Malone on a matter he cannot discuss. Oakland assumes Malone is two timing him with Long.

It's not true, but Oakland thinks it is and that's just as bad. The truth is not very pleasant either for Oakland.

Simon Oakland stands out in this Big Valley story.

What's the secret?
mlbroberts28 April 2020
Jarrod has been having meetings in far away towns with Adam Howard's wife, and Howard finds out about them. Much of this episode is taken with the question "Is Jarrod having an affair with another man's wife?" Even Mama Victoria is left to wonder and confronts Jarrod in a scene that is probably the best one Barbara Stanwyck and Richard Long had together in this series. Watch their eyes.

Howard is convinced not only is Jarrod having an affair with his wife. He is also the father of the boy Howard thought was his son. Howard's jealousy runs so high he takes it out on the entire Barkley family by denying them transport for their fruit crop and denying them water for their herd of cattle. In the end the question is, can this be fixed and who will fix it, especially since Jarrod will never let the secret out?

Fairly Interesting

In this installment of the series, Jarrod and Simon Oakland's wife have a 'secret' which will not be revealed here: not on your ninny! Instead, I will write of tidbits concerning this wonderfully entertaining show.

Like Simon Oakland here, the series was famous for casting a terrific array of guest starring performers who added to the show's color, class and sheer entertainment value.

Imagine having the likes of Milton Berle, Julie Harris, Buddy Hackett, Robert Goulet, Colleen Dewhurst, James Gregory, Maurice Evans, Anne Baxter, Bruce Dern, Susan Oliver, Lou Rawls, Bradford Dillman - etc. joining the colorful fun in Stockton! The show was very well-conceived and the majority of the story lines were imaginative and extremely well-presented: the acting was usually very fine.
