Rip is drilling the troop. Rusty is drilling too to be ready to fight the renegade Apaches led by Tumacori. Worse, a second band led by Magnus Colorado is planning on joining Tumacori. Rip plans on using a wagon as a diversion, a sort of Trojan Horse to spring a trap to catch Tumacori. Inadvertently, Rusty crawled into the wagon for a nap.
The troop is moving out and Rip has some volunteers get into the supply wagon. The troopers with Boone in charge are unaware that Rusty and Rinty are hiding inside. O'Hara is scouting and observes Tumacori take the bait and attack the wagon. O'Hara gives a signal and Rip leads his flank offensive into attack. Rinty attacks and captures Tumacori. Rip is justifiably upset about Rusty hiding in the wagon.
Rip leads a patrol out to try and find out the Indians strength. When they come upon what looks like a party of dead soldiers, Rip has O'Hara hold the patrol back while he moves to investigate. The Indians have dressed in the cavalry uniforms as their own Trojan Horse, now they have Rip. Tumacori must be returned or Masters dies.
Rusty decides he is going with the patrol to rescue Rip. But there isn't going to be a rescue. Major Swanson believes he can't afford to risk more men when they are already outnumbered. Rusty, however, decides even though it means being kicked out of the army, he is going to mount his own rescue party of two.
Boone and O'Hara plead for a patrol to rescue Rusty and Rip. Major Swanson says he can't do that, the fort is too undermanned now. Swanson also tells Boone and O' Hara if they or anyone else try, they will be charged with desertion. Rip is being held in a teepee and at night Rusty and Rinty enter the tent, they find Rip is suffering from temporary blindness. Rip has overheard the Indians talking, they have a secret tunnel and are using it to join up with Magnus Colorado, a renegade chief. Rusty has to get back to the fort to let the Major know how the Indians are leaving what was thought to be a box canyon.
Rusty leaves but Rinty remains behind to act as a guide dog. Rusty leads Masters away and helps him hide from the Indians. Rusty gets back to tell Major Swanson what the Indians are planning. Swanson leads a charge at the enemy knowing they are outnumbered but they have to take a stand to stop Magnus Colorado from advancing.
Meanwhile Quemado has followed Rinty but Masters is able to jump him. Reinforcements have arrived and Magnus Colorado flees. Rinty brings Masters to Swanson. Rip recovers his sight and tells Rusty he may be a hero, but he is going to doing a lot of KP.
