The single weirdest movie I have ever seen, and I've seen many
bushido77728 August 2008
I saw this movie at an Australian film festival and yeaaah. This is one of those movies that isn't strange in a way that becomes cool or even in a way that you have to get your friends to see it. It's just plain weird.

The movie is very slow and you are constantly left with a feeling of wondering where it's going. You spend most of the movie hoping that at the end something brilliant will happen and make it all worth while.

It doesn't.

It's the kind of movie that at the end you look at your friends on either side of you and go okaaaaay. It's not freaky enough to cause people to leave the room, it's not freaky enough to be groundbreaking or to become a cult classic, it's weird.

I know I keep saying the same thing, but that's all that really can be said about this movie.

I gave it a 6 out of 10 because the movie wasn't really any good at all, but it was weird enough that it stands out in my mind as being "really" weird, and weird in such a unique way.

It's definitely an experience. Just don't ask me what kind.

The Film of bizarre and meaningless vague and wasted production
curiouscarnivore4 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The whole storyline was disturbing, uncomfortable, sexually macabre and beyond strange. The main character lacked quality and failed in attempting to reach the films audience. The relationship between doctor and patient was in no way a realistic or logical truth. Her attempts in trying to show depression and panic attacks , and a generally mentally unhealthy individual failed miserably. It was very uncomfortable in her behaving in a way that viewers could begin to understand. As for the deformed and ugly life form she found on the beach, and how she in no way saw it as something that any normal person would tell themselves to not touch don't pick it up and find it digusting and strange, as to this creature's origin, the film gave no explanation. As to how the hell the main character became profoundly connected the 'thing' in a sexual manner..showed her only to be a poor actor showing no talent or realistic behavior The fact we are to try understand she kept the creature for the simple fact it gave her sexual satifaction.. Whoever wrote this script is definitely repressed and has an unhealthy mind state toward sexual healthy behavior The title of this movie had no connection to the theme and the poor acting and disturbing theme gave the whole movie a definite fail and low rating.. It gave no start middle or end .. vague bizarre and unrealistic in every way.. I hope I never let myself spend the that length of time trying to connect and understand and hope for some enlightenment of such a wasted and generally meaningless movie

DVD at last
mwesley-200-58024917 December 2013
Finally - since seeing this at the Festival of Fantastic Films in Manchester a few years back with the director Andrew Parkinson in attendance I have been waiting/hoping for a DVD release..at last, a company called Jinga Films is releasing a DVD in Feb 2014..extraordinary,surreal,disturbing,beautifully acted and almost unclassifiable,I would urge any horror fan to take a chance and snap this up..the wait is over. Part Cronenberg, part Parkinson,if you have seen any of his other films, especially his lauded debut "I,Zombie" you may have an ides what to expect, but this movie is it's own animal and exerts an odd, somewhat erotic hold as it explores it's main character's state of mind and her peculiar obsession,to say the least.

Great Performance By Jodie Jameson
wood-6984125 September 2017
I was motivated to write this review because of the comments made by another reviewer, curiouscarnivore, who cannot make any sense of this film whatsoever, and thinks this must be due to poor acting, a failure to provide explanations and the plot being unrealistic.

While there is no cure for a lack of imagination, maybe if the film had been described as a surreal mystery instead of a horror movie, then it may just have given that reviewer some kind of clue. But it's all subjective. There are films with a clearly defined beginning, middle and end, where the director takes you by the hand and gently explains everything that happens, if this is what you require, so that there is no confusion left in your mind.

'Venus Drowning' isn't one of them. It is virtually a one-woman show, the whole thing being held together by Jodie Jameson's astonishing performance. I have seldom seen an actress who looks so natural and plays her part so convincingly. I have since managed to obtain a copy of her short film 'f2point8' directed by Paul Hills.

That's not to say that 'Venus Drowning' is perfect. Which film is? There are parts that I would have edited out, but then I'm not an editor or a director. I am simply a collector and I like to think a discerning one. The majority of DVDs that I buy end up either on Ebay or at the charity shop. This one I decided to keep, and realized to my surprise that it was one of only four British films in my collection.
