Cool animation and clever (if unsubtle) digs at the 2004 Olympics
bob the moo3 May 2005
Hello and welcome to the finals of the international limbo extreme competition. Following last week's exciting semi-final, we are down to the last group of competitors who must work their way through increasingly limited spaces to be the first to reach the centre of the obstacle and claim the prize. The crowds are ready, the MTV visuals primed, the girls waxed and the announcers over-excited so, without further ado, lets get to the action.

As with any product associated with the Blackwatch company, I was looking forward to this short film and hoping it would do what the other films seem to have done and be cool and entertaining. On these grounds the film didn't let me down even if it wasn't as sharp as perhaps it thought it was. From 2004 the film is a clear attack on the Olympics coverage where adverts are never far away, sex sells and commentators try and outdo one another by getting more and more excited over trivial points and sports. In doing this the film is about as subtle as a brick and may put off some viewers by how direct it is; however I understood the limitations of the short media and could forgive this.

As with many of their shorts, this film has cool animation that is high in style throughout. It may be a bit gory and violent but it worked for me even if I didn't totally get the point of the sport itself becoming excessive (as opposed to the trimmings doing the same – that I got). Overall this is not a perfect short film but it is a cool attack on the Olympic coverage and done in a stylish manner. Once again Nicola Black has proved herself to be a name that I will come back to time and time again.
