I liked the movie.
awaraich13 December 2005
The songs are good. Not a great story, but really great going by the general standard of the Punjabi movies. Jimmy Shergill looks good, and a little better than Harbhajan Mann because Jimmy is an actor by profession. Manmohan Singh seems to be the only person making some good standard Punjabi movies. Please support the Punjabi movie industry by buying this DVD. We need more Punjabi movies like these. The comedy by Ghuggi is also good, but the other actress that was paired with her (I don't remember the name) is not so good. Seems like she was unfit for the role, and her Punjabi was also not so good. Still, overall the movie was pretty good. All the Punjabis will really enjoy it.

It's always springtime with the beloved...
Sherazade30 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
...or at least that's what the subtitles said the title of this movie means in English. Anyways, Jimmy Shergill leads an all a star cast as NavDeep(or Deep as he is affectionately called by friends) a young Punjabi lad, full of life attending college just like anybody else. Yaaran Naal Baharaan

The movie opens with Deep and his friends riding to school on their motorbikes and singing about life and being young. Once they arrive on campus the distinction amongst all five friends becomes apparent once girls are thrown into the mix. One friend is too busy with books to care about them, one is too scared of his authoritarian uncle to care about them, another cares too much about getting high on drugs to care about girls & another just can't seem the pick the one he likes. But Deep, well Deep's different because he has his eye on a particular beauty named Harman (played by the pitch perfect as a peach Juhee Babbar) but just hasn't mustered up the courage to go up to her.

Everyday, the boys arrive early on campus to join Deep in checking out Harman and her friends walking to class and one day they get bored doing this, so they persuade him to go and talk to her. Deep does this but his advances are rebuffed by Harman who thinks he is too bold and too sure of himself. Throw in the class comic (a guy named Rangeela who is also a professional student) who has fallen in love with their Botany teacher (by the way this teacher is also sweet on Deep but that's a whole different story LOL!) and you know his antics would eventually lead to countless song and dance numbers that would get the boys and girls chatting with each other soon.

Anywho, once Deep and Harman get together, they soon realise that they have overcome yet another obstacle, which is the fact that both their fathers (Harman's dad is played by Anupam Kher & Deep's dad is played by Raj Babbar) were rivals in college as well as in the army and neither one would bow down to the other.

All in all it's a very welcome alternative to the usual Bollywood flair. YNB while being a distinctively Punjabi production, is less colourful or mechanical as the average Bollywood melodramas, I think it also benefits a lot from the Yash Raj films banner backing it.

I got the sense (during the first half of the film) that the production was turning out to be an overwrought television advertisement for the campus (Punjab University, Chandigarh) location on which it was shot but thanking the second half makes up for the slightly overzealous first half. The film's star in my opinion is Juhee Babbar, an amazing actress as well as dancer. Once she appears on the screen you can hardly take your eyes off of her because she has such a commanding presence. She also possesses a rare quality and that is the fact that she is able to separate her acting/dancing talent from her good looks. When its time for her to do the Bollywood vogue shots, she comes correct and when it's time to do the serious scenes, she brings it as well. Though her pairing against Jimmy Shergill was slightly off, she makes the best of it. I find it hard to believe that she has only appeared in two films at this point.

A lot of the writing seemed like the director(MANMOHAN SINGH)was trying to show the world how pompous and egotistical Punjabis could be and the whole Punjabi versus Gujariti scenario going on between Anupam Kher's character and his wife was a tad-bit unnecessary. But all in all it was a decent film. I recommend it.

Dry...please stop being so stiff
achapunneka3 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Though this movie had all the qualities of a classical Indian movie, it ended up being a little dry and stiff. The chemistry between the two lovebirds is surreal, you cant understand if the too really love each other or they are flirting. I cant comment on the Punjabi since I'm not Indian, but the dialogs seem to have flown well...unlike in Mangal Pandey where the Hindi of the English troops made me puke. I cant compare the two but their Punjabi flowed. The story was nice overall, but i wish the ending wasn't so dry... Its all about obeying your parents and doing whats best for them apparently. Respecting their opinion, even if it has to do with life decision. I loved the fact that the movie was new but old school. NO sex scenes, just the usual spirit of old Indian movies not junk like Salaam Namaste or Shaadi Number 1 or Gharam Masala.

This movie deserves an A+
iaf_inviolable12 December 2005
what can i say about this movie..well lets start with the acting..it wasn't that bad..in fact juhi babbar did quite an amazing job with the delivery of her dialogs..her Facial expressions were unbelievable..she plays a wonderful role of a typical Indian girl who respects her parents and her culture..her elegant looks almost blows-away every single audience..Jimmy shergill on the other hand wasn't that bad either..although he needs to learn how to speak fluent Punjabi if he wants to look like a Professional Punjabi Actor..His acting was bit above the average..and he woouldn't be a bad choice for any producers or directors who are looking for a decent Punjabi actor..Raj babbar who plays a role of an Army major(jimmy's dad) in the movies does a tremendous JOb..His character seemed so original..Bravo Mr babbar good Job lol....Anupam Kher appeared in his first Punjabi movie.and i must say his Punjabi was so fluent and not even for a moment one would think hes not the typical Punjabi fellow who's extremely hot blooded..however like most Punjabi fathers he loves his daughter(Juhi babbar) too..The movies itself was so innovational and so original..it was very well Directed and orientated..this movie Deserves an A+..well done Manmohan singh the writer of the movie..thanks for such a Masterpiece.

Nice Punjabi Mush
achandeepsingh27 January 2006
Probably the first time i have seen such a well shot and edited Punjabi movie. I think Manmohan Singh has really set the standard for other producers in the Punjabi film industry.

The storyline is not unusual, but the overall execution and performances of the actors is nice and the movie really takes the viewer into the lives of the characters. Most viewers will be able to connect with it and will thoroughly enjoy it.

A University Campus, Boy meets girls, falls for her, woos her. Girl relents. Happy romance, parents do not agree. They fight, run away from home??? No. That is where it is different. The particular scene where the couple decide not to go against their respective parents' wishes but to make them see their children's' point of view was good and sensitive.

An out and out happy and heart warming film. A must watch for the whole family.

A very good movie (a must watch)
tips197517 December 2005
Well Yaaran Naal Baharan is a really good movie and cinematography is great. Althught the storyline is an average one but good cinematography and acting made all the difference. Jimmy Shergill did a really great job. His dialogue delivery was perfect although at times he overacted but bottom line is he was great. The dialogues were all taken out from daily student life and did not sound artificial as is the case with other Punjabi movies.

Ghuggi was at his best. And his clothes were really funny. I don't know from where he found them. He looked true rangeela.

Juhi Babbar was above average considering it was her first Punjabi movie.

So .... WATCH IT !!!!
