Almost exactly 10 years ago, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale” launched the young Oakland filmmaker into the upper echelons of Hollywood influence. With “Black Panther” and “Creed,” Coogler brought fresh energy and social consciousness to existing franchises while expanding their appeal to underserved audiences. Now, those efforts have expanded to the documentary realm.
Two years ago, Coogler rooted his filmmaking efforts beyond the blockbuster arena in the creation of a production company, Proximity Media, which yielded studio efforts like “Space Jam 2” and the Oscar-nominated “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Initially co-founded by Coogler with wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, the company eventually added a non-fiction division overseen by fellow Bay Area filmmaker Peter Nicks. Over the past year, that collaboration has yielded the company’s first two documentary releases, the Sundance-premiering NBA portrait “Stephen Curry: Underrated” and now “Anthem,” which premiered last month on Hulu. The new movie follows composer...

There are three white fortresses that neatly demarcate the divides so evocatively drawn in Igor Drljača’s “The White Fortress,” recently named Bosnia and Herzegovina’s submission for the 94th Oscars. There’s the grim, encircling tower block in which scrappy low-level hustler Faruk (Pavle Čemerkić) lives with his grandmother. There’s the modernist dream home perched on a hill that belongs to the wealthy, distant, politically corrupt parents of teenager Mona (Sumeja Dardagan). And there’s the famous late-medieval White Fortress, or Bijela Tabija, the national monument that overlooks Sarajevo, where Faruk and Mona spend a single night of their doomed romance in an embrace that inevitably dissolves in the cold light of morning.
The love-across-the-social-divide narrative is hardly new, but writer-director Drljača turns familiarity into an advantage. Along with a gently intense performance from pale-eyed rising Balkan star Čemerkić, it allows him to pay attention to...

Breaking: The Wes Anderson-directed Moonrise Kingdom captured the Best Picture Award at the 22nd Independent Feature Project’s Gotham Awards. Tonight’s fete at Cipriani Wall Street is the first of many awards gatherings, with this one specifically dedicated to the celebration of the best of independent film. The awards were hosted by Mike Birbiglia, who was up for a Breakthrough Actor Award for Sleepwalk With Me. Hate to say it, but he seemed to sleepwalk through his opening monologue, though it’s kind of a Gotham Award tradition to see awkward openings of the show. Birbiglia did a word for word recitation of David O Russell’s fit of anger toward Lily Tomlin in the virally distributed clip caught on the set of the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees. Nobody laughed, and after The Fighter and now Silver Linings Playbook, didn’t Russell (who was among those being honored...
