Cinderella with Complicatiions
boblipton28 September 2016
When poor working girl Edna Flugrath finds an invitation to a fancy dress ball, she crashes the party and falls in love with George Lessey. However, when another guest's brooch goes missing, suspicion falls on the one person present whom no one can vouch for in this Edison short subject.

It's a nicely written and executed variation on the Cinderella story, with a large cast on screen during the ball scenes and some beautiful scenic design and work. In addition, it continues the Edison style of telling its story in a purely visual fashion, with the acting -- fairly broad for the era -- resulting in few titles. It's a style of film making that would soon vanish and the Edison product would begin to flounder. For the moment, however, this is a very watchable short film from the era before longer works would begin to appear in movie theaters.
