Well-made action feature in the porn cycle

I'm not a fan of the slick approach to pornography exemplified in Vivid and Wicked label features, but Michael Raven's BLUE RAIN is quite good. Kaylani Lei gets a rare characterization (not mere gonzo assignment) and runs with it.

She's the title cop, a dumb name, but catchy. One supposes marketing rather than story craft came up with that moniker, which seems to invoke all sorts of connotations from Prince to that Hollywood yakuza picture, just a different color.

This cop thriller has an interesting wrinkle, beginning with Lei shooting fellow cop Mr. Marcus. She infiltrated his unit to get the goods on him, and the story is told in flashbacks that she narrates.

Featuring both color and b&w segments, picture aims at an Urban/Ethnic demographic, as music industry rack jobbers might note. That means plenty of mixed-combo action, beginning with Marcus getting a blow job during a stakeout.

Rain becomes his new partner, and there's plenty of verbal exposition. That plus the 91-minute running time indicate this is far from the 30 minutes times five vignettes style that haunts current story-oriented porn.

One surprise for me, watching the movie several years after first sampling it, was the similarity of story structure to the current hit TRUE DETECTIVE TV series. I don't jump to conclusions -in fact I would bet this is strictly coincidence, but RAIN's frequent coming back to the interrogation room format is interesting in light of our familiarity with the decade-later show.

It's nice to see Olivia Del Rio in a real feature after so many all-sex appearances, as she delivers the requisite big-breast component. There are some interesting minor diversions along the way, though predictably the feature's action content and big shootout stagings are hardly up to the level of the sex scenes, as Raven & co. keep the prime directive (i.e., masturbation fodder) squarely in mind.
