Nothing could be more winsome than the way little Dolores Costello plays her role in this picture, in its opening and closing scenes. As a comedy, the picture is unfortunate. The captain's African legacy, with "conditions" and the adventures that he and Captain Bunce have in getting possession of it, are just a trifle out of good taste. It will not widely offend; but it will not widely appeal to spectators as very funny. As an adventure, it gets across better. It is only a fair offering. Van Dyke Brooke is Barnacle; Hughy Mack is Bones and Kate Price and Flora Finch are burnt-cork negresses. - The Moving Picture World, September 21, 1912
