Weak rom-com from Sin City
lor_16 June 2018
Cameraman Jack Remy gets the screen credit (or blame) for directing "High Infidelity", but his collaborator (who also handles a camera here) Michael Raven receive's the possessive credit for this underwhelming stab at the Rom-Com genre, XXX division.

It's an ensemble piece taking place at a wedding reception for newlyweds Jessica Drake and Dillon Day, with frequent flashbacks to inject as many sex scenes as the show will allow. Oddly, the end credits crawl gives Dillon last billing while Jess is first, while the abbreviated opening credits is fairer to DD.

Screenplay by George Kaplan and Raven tries to keep things light and frothy, but errs on the side of triviality. These paper-thin characters do not develop, and a sort of real-time approach might work for a thriller like TV's classic series "24" but not in this genre.

Main complications are that Dillon and Jess don't love each other, in a marriage of convenience, but she still hankers for her old flame Evan Stone, who was from the wrong side of the tracks. Since Evan and Jess were a real-life couple (he introduced her into porn, first starring at Sin City before her legendary Wicked Pictures contract run) their sex scene is performed bareback, while safe-sex condoms appear throughout the rest of the show.

Mike Horner shows his excellent farceur chops as father of the bride, including a well-executed bit of bedroom sex comedy involving his wife Nina Hartley and their yet-to-be-revealed mutual lover Monica Mayhem.

For a star vehicle Drake is largely lost in the shuffle, especially upstaged by a buxom blonde L.A. LaMann who steals the movie with a larger-than-life turn that reminded me of '50s great Joi Lansing.. Inari Vachs lends her Eve Arden style to the show while in a major role Phoenix Ray as lead bridesmaid is unimpressive. Both Phoenix and Nina suffer with very sloppy misspellings in the credits, and even the title is varied absentmindedly: "Hi Infidelity" on the box and "High Infidelity" on screen.

One nice touch is a string of pearls attached under Jess's wedding dress (she plays several scenes with just a corset and veil), that frame Evan's dick elegantly during their sex scene, reminding me of a classic pearls-around-the-cock fetish that made a Mandingo/Lauren Kain vignette classic in Jules Jordan's "Once You Go Black 4" shot four years later.
