Fabulous

L'Italiana in Algeri is one of Rossini's best operas, and this is a truly fabulous studio recording version of the opera. The orchestra sparkle in their beautiful playing and as well as having a zesty style they prove also that they can be sensitive accompanists for the singers. The conducting from Gary Bertini compliments them in a lively and incisive reading, and the chorus are beautifully blended and animated. The principal singing promises much and delivers even more. Best of all is the authoritative and very funny Mustafa of Sesto Bruscantini, who sings with perfect diction, commanding tone and wonderful phrasing. Lucia Valentini-Terrani is every bit his equal as Isabella, her voice is strikingly rich but also has impeccable agility. Ugo Benelli has a pure and very lyrical tenor voice with a smooth high register, which is ideal for Lindoro and Rossini in general. Enzo Dara sings assertively and his Taddeo is witty and humane. Norma Palacios-Rossi, Gigliola Caputi and Alfredo Mariotti are also spot on, singing and characterising with professionalism. Overall, fabulous with a cast that prove themselves up to the demands of the music perfectly. 10/10 Bethany Cox
