Cab driver Willem de Swaen is dragged out of his car and beaten so badly he later dies from his wounds. His company boss leans heavily on the police to arrest Moroccan student-cabbie Hamid, who had a fist-fight with Willem and has no alibi but his ma. Although warned by Paul, Leontien manages to break every rule in the book and loose Hamid while wearing her handcuffs. The only witness is a nightmare. Tom finds an angle: Willem's ex-con colleague Harry van Swinderen.

Publican Paddy is gutted in his Iris pub 'Shamrock', in his blood is written Seamus, name of a gentle student whose brother John Egan has a criminal record in Northern Ireland. Paul makes sure the good boy doesn't suffer needlessly. Tom's emotive partner Masha is in Kamp's computer shop when it's vandalized by the long unidentified florist Roland Otten. Instead of arresting him or calling backup, she even lets Otten taken her gun. Kamp proves a poet and apparent romantic match for her, but a grim past catches up.

Henk van der Scheur is furious when his team is under IA investigation by the despised detective Reinierse. Reason is the disappearance of both Tom Kaufman and an undercover informant, which nobody told the boss about. Indeed Tom is being held and interrogated, soon tortured, by crime baron Bertelman and his burly aid Fritz. But there's more to the story, leading to surprising results for various characters.

Tom personally brings his son Jan to primary school, where seven parents filed utterly unsubstantiated complaints for child abuse against principal Weistra. Tom tries to reconcile the principle of innocence without proof and parental protective instincts, admirably controlling his own. Meanwhile Tom has to rely for back-up on Masha while answering a distress call from Turkish immigrants. She fails to shoot armed suspect Meral, who stood over the corps of her uncle Kadir, just because that's a deaf girl. She just assumes the killer must be a Turk she saw run away, later identified as Yilmaz.
