Having first taken notice of the handsome and well-built Mike de Marco in the execrable R-rated sex comedy PELVIS, imagine my delight discovering he'd appeared in a string of straight and gay hardcore features. Only in the '70s.
De Marco is the KNIGHT of the title, dreamed up by protagonist Edward (Easton Wells) while reading a book on ancient heraldry. Transported to an extremely cut-rate medieval times, Edward soon becomes page to the handsome and well-endowed Sir Guy (de Marco), though his dalliance with competing chevalier Sir Randolph (slender David Savage, most famous from Radley Metzger XXXers like BARBARA BROADCAST and NAKED CAME THE STRANGER) threatens to spell the end of their storybook romance.
There's not really any plot to KNIGHT, just several scenes of Edward popping back in time to make love with guys on dimestore castle interiors. What distinguishes the film - if only slightly - is the seeming passion with which it was conceived, evident from small touches like the opening credits, presented (almost unreadably) as text over medieval tableaux, or the care in choosing the costumes, which look more realistic than standard chintzy movie armor. Given the singular credit of mysterious director "Anthony S.," it seems highly probable KNIGHT is an example of some individual's sole dalliance in porn, probably more out of a desire to realize a fantasy than anything else. That purity of purpose imbues KNIGHT with a sweetness that helps it overcome some of its technical deficiencies (poor sets, bad staging, sex scenes that are indifferently shot and lack heat). A runtime of barely over 50 minutes doesn't hurt either, nor does the film's greatest asset, undoubtedly its handsome and well-built star, who's still well worthy of a hard-on nearly five decades hence.
